The Section 103 Postgame Report

5. They have to do a better job blocking out on the initial shot after someone breaks the press. North Alabama got a couple of cheap buckets off the offensive glass in the first half.

7. The points guards were so so. My guess is that they're going to be what most of us expect.

8. I'm skeptical whether or not this team is built to press in the manner the head coach wants to. They're long, but they are not overly quick.

A few questions for you hat since I didn't see the game.

5. Is this just a lack of discipline that you seen only one possessions when we were pressing? because it seems to me just from reading your post that it would be more of a problem of being outnumbered because the press is broken and if that happens then they should have numbers on us.

7. I know that CBP was quoted praising bobby maze for distributing the ball well. Did you see an improvement in his ability to get teammates good looks or was that just the result of players being open due to the competition?

8. Do you feel our quickness hurts us on our rotation or more on the ability to deny the ball in all places but the corner and get the initial trap?

Last question, after seeing McBee for the first time in a Tennessee uniform do you believe he is going to be able to get open and get shots over SEC defenders?

thanks

1. The 'AA has ruined exhibition games. A game against the Argentinian Junior National Team or the Globetrotters is a barometer, while a matchup with North Alabama is a glorified shootaround.
2. This team still doesn't value the ball enough. Way too many loose possessions tonight.
3. Good to see Woolridge have the offensive flurry bridging the halves. For the first 19 minutes, he looked like the worst player in America.
4. This group does do a good job of sharing the ball. Thirty plus assists, especially on a night when guys could have gotten big numbers going one on one, is an indication of that.
5. They have to do a better job blocking out on the initial shot after someone breaks the press. North Alabama got a couple of cheap buckets off the offensive glass in the first half.
6. Cam Tatum is still lacking his pre injury explosiveness. He failed to finish because of a lack of lift at the rim a couple of times.
7. The points guards were so so. My guess is that they're going to be what most of us expect.
8. I'm skeptical whether or not this team is built to press in the manner the head coach wants to. They're long, but they are not overly quick.
9. Kenny Hall's energy is a welcome addition. He'll help against teams like Ole Miss that don't have bruisers in the post.
10. Rome wasn't built in a day. Nothing great or awful out of this one.

The thing that stood out the most was how easily they dribbled through our press (we did get a lot of turnovers but they also had some pretty open drives).

The other thing is our tendency to leave our feet THEN look to dish. JP was guilty of this often last year.

Overall I am as pleased as I could be given it being the first game against a third-rate opponent.

While we are waiting on Hat I will give you my take:
I think 5 had to do with boxing out and rebounding and we did a very poor job of that in the first half - Williams didn't play that half and he probably does the best at it for us. We were about even with a much smaller team in rebounds at the end of the first half.

7. I think it was some of each- there were times when we moved and distributed the ball very well. Other times N. Alabama just not guarding anyone.

8. We are pretty long at times but not very quick anywhere that I have seen. CBP's first couple of teams were amazingly quick and great pressers. This team not so much even though BP would like them to be. You have some long arms but very little quickness and if last night was an indication it looked to me like you would be giving up as much as you gained by pressing against good teams. Just don't seem to have the personel for it.

Lastly, after seeing McBee for the first time it would not
appear to me that he would be able to get open and or shoot over SEC guards. Keeping in mind that he is a walkon and he got a lot of minutes, he had a beautiful smooth stroke, but was constantly getting left by his man on D, ran to his spot on offense and mostly stayed there so not much movement without the ball, and he is rather smallish and does not shoot the fade away jumper that some small guards like Lofton, Justus, and others develop because they are small.

Based on last night, if teams play a man he will not score very much at all in my opinion. If teams leave him alone in a zone he could hurt them but I don't see that happening much unless you are N. Alabama etc. He won't hurt you too much but I don't think that he will be able to get many shots against an SEC caliber guard playing man to man. He is going to haft to move his feet better and stay in front of his man on defense as well. He is very good for a walk on, but I am afraid some SEC guards may eat him alive.

Question about Hopson. Does he still shoot with the big arc? I know the coaches wanted him to work on that.

They just weren't doing a good job of identifying their men and getting a body on them.

Maze always distributes the ball. My issues with him relate to his inability to penetrate defenses and stay in front of his man defensively.

I just have reservations about this team's ability to cover the ground necessary to make the press effective.

I've still got my doubts. A great deal of his success, or lack thereof, will be dependent on whether his teammates can break people down and draw extra defenders. That would get him some open looks.

Hopson's shot looked much improved, and he looked very confident in using it.

Speaking of Kenny Hall... is Allan Houston's number not retired? That surprised me a little

He didn't play in the second half so his numbers won't look all that impressive. But, IMO, he looked fine. Didn't shoot the outside ball and drove to the basket most of the time.
OK, thanks....I enjoy watching Tyler play, he's a nice guy too....I don't care if it was at the RTL against way inferior talent on the other team I watched him throw down 2 of the sickest dunks I've ever seen

Bernard King is the only retired jersey so far. However, according to the set standards of UT for retirement eligibility... Houston is eligible.

Just don't know if there is any communication between the two about it. Seems I remember there being a little bad blood after Wade was let go.

also Ernie Grunfield

and if someone else has their jersey retired, Dale Ellis will be next.
