Fans seem to forget that the program was on a pretty steady downhill slide with Summitt; we'd fallen off quite a bit. Recruiting was mediocre. The chronic problems we have with bad team offense--poor movement, terrible passing, lousy shooting and too many turnovers--all started under Summitt. We've had these same problems--EVERY YEAR--for a decade or longer. The game got better--better players, better coaches--and PS's reliance on rebounding and defense became outdated. Warlick wasn't qualified to take over this program--and then to make matters worse she hews to PS's old philosophy of defense and rebounding; the offense is even worse now than it was under PS, which is saying something, and the wheels are coming off what was once an orange and white Ferrari. We're more like a Ford Escort these days....
Again I beg to differ on some of the finer points. The slide you mention, not getting to a final four after the Candace era, is a fact. That was the baby vol era. Summitt's error was not spacing her recruiting her better (too many freshman coming in with no senior leadership) and the tragic knee injury to Vicki Baugh.
But in terms of recruiting, Vicki B. had superstar written all over her before the injuries. The LVs have never had a more physically gifted recruit than Glory Johnson; Shekinna Stricklen had the skills and physical gifts to have been an AA. While showing flashes of brilliance, she never become that consistent game changer the team needed. Other players like Kamiko Williams, Alicia Manning were all very solid players; in fact, I think Kamiko had the potential for greatness.
I don't think CPS handled that team has effectively as one would have hoped. They had 3 years in a row of getting knocked out in the regional final, though 2 of those were at the hands of Baylor who was a pretty tough match-up. And thery had games were they looked like the best team in the country; it was inconsistency that was their Achilles heel.
All in all, there was a drop but not nearly as severe as you paint it.
Turning to Holly she was maintaining that level-- competing for SEC titles and knocking at the door of the final four. In fact last years 30 win season, given the injuries, was a commendable one.
This season is the one which stands out as a major drop-off barring a major turn around (which seems unlikely).
