Basketball like no other sport seems to have such a huge advantage for the home team. I don't feel like it is an exaggeration to say the home team virtually starts the game with a double digit lead. What is the biggest factor in this advantage?

Crowd?

Routine?

Familiarity with court(shooting)?

Added:
Officiating?

Confidence?

Basketball is such an energy sport and a game of runs. The home crowd can give the team energy on D and help them get out of funks when the other team starts a run on them.

I also think the shooting plays a big part too.

I would like to know if teams that don't enjoy good home crowds still have the same kind of success. I suspect that teams at lower levels and with less crowds still have more of those runs that you speak of at home.

Any amount of a crowd is better than no crowd or a hostile crowd.

I see your point but a home crowd for Lipscomb vs North Florida wouldn't be the kind of crowd that would give a team energy to make runs. There may not be the same home court advantage at places like that as in the SEC but I would like to know if there is similar results in home teams winning at those type schools.

Confidence

This is the biggest reason IMO. I blame coaches for this one on the road. We heard CM say his team wasn't mentally tough enough to win on the road earlier in the year. I think coaches put to much emphasis on the difference of playing at home and on the road and thus adds pressure to the players on the road. They constantly hear how they have to be mentally tough and play their best to be able to win and that places serious doubt in their mind if they will win as the road team. They are told the home teams are going to make runs and I feel they sit back and wait for that to happen in some cases.

Seems to me that the home team, more often than not, gets home cookin from the refs. Unless you're playing ky.

Thats true. I wonder who gets more home cookin between Duke vs UK on a neutral court? With Dickie V calling the game.

As of all games completed Wed. 2/22
All of The SEC teams are 146-37 at home
On the road, all teams combined are 35-72
Take KY out, (who is 7-1) on the road, the rest of the SEC is 28-71 .283 on the road.
Take out Vandy too the ONLY other team with a road winning record (6-3)
The other 10 teams are a combined 22-68 .311 on the road.
Arkansas is the only team in the SEC w/o a road win, and more wins than KY (17) at home.
At least this year... There's no place like home!!!!

Nice post. Numbers don't lie. 22-68 for 10 of the teams in the league. That's unreal.

That's one reason if we out together a good resume I think our road woes will be overlooked, every team in the sec except 2 has had them.

Wow. Nice number crunching. Really puts things into perspective.

Statistically, road wins are harder to come by in basketball than in football every year. That's going by the % of games won by the visiting team throughout all of D-1.

Would Duke players be allowed to chest stomp UK players that are lying on the court? Apparently that also affects the outcome.

To win in the road you usually need to be more talented and/or more mature than the home team. Since most truely talented players leave early these days it's hard for anyone to have both. I wonder if home court made such a difference back in the days when everyone seemed to stay at least 3 years.

Because of referees. I wish I could remember where I found it, but the studies shows the home team is going to get more calls.

Donovan has definitely beefed up the schedule in recent years. I remember the 2007 season when the defending champions played a joke schedule.

Guys and gals, it's simple. Comfort! Dispell if you'd like with stats. All I know from stats is this... I shot 71% at home in 4 years and 42% on the road as a 5'10" SG. I spent 4 years shooting all the time in my home gym. I knew the stroke from any place on the floor. The head gets messed just by changing surroundings. As simple as another HS gym. Take it for what it's worth.
