I swam competitively from age 8 or so and continue to swim at my local Y. I usually go do about 2000 yards (try to go 2-3 times a week)

Any former/current swimmers on here?

I'd love to compare/discuss different workouts, sets, etc. Get some other's input/ideas.

It's the best workout there is. Bring it.

I guess this will be my own thread. Here's what I did today.

5 X 100 warm up
500 free
5 X 100 on the 1:55
3 X 100 (50 kick/50 swim)

1800 yards.

How old are you now?
Are you doing all your 100's freestyle?
I usually do a 200 warm up
8x100 alternating IM and freestyle on 2min interval
2x50 sprint. (just to blow it up. I'm usually darn tired by now)
400 cool down.
I only get to the pool once a week.

I'm 30, and yep freestyle.

2 min for 100 IM seems tough.

I alternate IM and Freestyle. Freestyle 1st. That last IM is is pretty brutal. the 2 sprints after that don't really resemble sprints. I'm 43 so probably not as tough as you.

I was a sprinter. Went 46.92 at state my senior year in the 100 free.
was offered but did not swim in collage.
What was your event?

Impressive 100 free! I think mine was probably right around that but don't remember for sure. I know I went 23.6 in the 50 free...so maybe 48ish.

I swam the 50 and 100 free at state and southeasterns, maybe 100 fly too if I qualified. My HS didn't have a team so it wasn't as fun.

I was also an IMer and Flyer, I crushed people in summer league. (50 free, 100 IM, 50 Fly) Those short races and relays were the best.

5 X 100 warm up

500 free
10 X 50 free (on the 1:00)

2000 yards. Thought I was going to die on the IMs.

Soooo, I'm not doing that. The last time I tried all IM's I nearly died.
I like the overall workout of the IM but butterfly on that last one usually brings me to prayer.
Swimming tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes.
Remember when as a kid a 6000 yrd workout was no big deal.

I love to swim, but am not great. I have great endurance on land, but in the water I get tired really fast. I feel like it might be my stroke - not very efficient - but my fiance (who was a D1 swimmer) thinks it's fine. I don't get it. I really want to try a triathalon at some point, but the swimming is killing me.

I am the exact opposite. I hate running, get tired and bored fast, but could swim laps just about all day long if I wanted to.

If a former D1 swimmer says your stroke is fine,
I'd say it's plenty good enough. What about your breathing?

I'm guessing i'm JT3?

I would love to have one of those things! I'm assuming they are very expensive but I always get pumped when I see the commercials.

1) you are. When I shorten someones name I try to figure something that sound cool. You just look like a JT3 to me.
2) they start at 20,000. I would swim a lot more if I had one but That's a crap load of money for a tread mill.

Probably this. She's tried to give me pointers, but nothing that's changed much.

I think I just need to swim more. She got burned out from swimming, and likes running now. (which she's not very good at - I can run for miles and leave her in the dust)

"When the going gets tough the sprinters get out of the water." Either tell everyone you're a sprinter or breath on 3, find a song and sing along with your stroke.

You mean every 3rd stroke?

Ironically, I don't think I have a fast-twitch muscle in my body, but I can hold my own sprinting against her and her sis (another D1 swimmer)

This!

My coach used to say you know you're getting a good workout when you start talking to the black line.

golf - Other than your breathing....I bet you start out going too hard so you run out of energy quickly.

Concentrate on taking big breaths at consistent intervals (every 2 if you need to) and starting off nice and slow. I have problems with going out too fast too, I was a sprinter.
