You are obviously unaware of the intricacies of a Ponzi scheme.

This guy was a very smart guy. Being able to pull off that huge scheme proves he had so much going for him but he wasted it away in immorality and greed.

Smart? Shapiro? C'mon, man.

being a gigantic BS artist isn't the same thing as being smart. If he was smart, he wouldn't be sitting in Federal Prison right now.

He was a terrible person but very smart. Smart enough to con people out of a billion dollars. Its takes a great deal of intelligence to do that.

Now along with those good qualities were some serious issues but there is no question he had some intelligence.

He would be still at his con business if the economy hadn't let him down. Sadly for those investors the economy didn't outlive his scheme.

Hmmm?

The nature of a ponzi scheme is to end at some point. I doubt he'd still be conning people if the economy would've allowed. Either in Europe, dead or behind bars.

His "scheme" started off as a legit business venture, but he started using investors' money for his own expenses. When they asked where their investment was, he went out and asked for more money from other investors to pay the first, and so on.

Nothing intelligent about that. Seems pretty dumb, actually. Stealing thousands of dollars from your business associates with no "exit strategy". Sounds like a guy who cared about big boats and houses, and didn't have the means to live that lifestyle on his own.
