The Ultimate Cord Cutting Guide (merged)

Okay my DirecTV DVR fan has quit working and it's now constantly overheating and shutting down. Before I try and get a new one I want to check all my options for streaming.

What's everyone currently prefer? I really want something that includes locals that includes PBS.

I'm wondering about a combination of services like a mix between YouTube TV and Sling. I think I'll eventually get the service Frndly as we like the Hallmark channels.

I'm currently at around $125 or so for DirecTV. So anything cheaper is a big plus.

Can’t really see a reason to have YTTV and Sling at the same time. Sling does have A&E and History, but that’s a ton of overlap.

I've got Hulu live. It has locals, but not PBS. The only time that is an issue for me is when a new Ken Burns doc comes out. I don't know if the still have Nature and Frontline, but I liked those, too.

PBS will stream free on Roku. Its live show and then some limited content. Depending where you are usually can get PBS fairly easy with digital antenna. I can pick it up clear as day, but have a hard time with my local stations due to terrain

Most of us only watch a handful of broadcast stations regularly, so look at each service’s lineup and see who carries all or most of the ones you watch. For us that turned out to be YTTV but it could be Hulu or Sling or whatever.

But that just covers broadcast TV so you’ll still have subscriptions to whatever service has content you’re interested in — Disney+, HBOMax, Hulu, etc. And fwiw, we subscribe to Hulu without the Live while getting “cable” from YTTV, just because the offering on YTTV worked better for us than Hulu Live.

Costs of YTTV and the like are not a huge savings from cable or DirecTV but one big benefit is that you can watch it anywhere (although most cable providers are offering streaming services now in some form or another). One good selling point of YTTV is the free unlimited DVR storage.

We are going to re-up our YouTube TV for football season and shut it off when it’s over. We don’t watch much live TV any other time of the year and utilize about every major stream service instead (Hulu/Disney bundle, Peacock, Netflix, Boomerang for the kids, Prime). May cut one or two of the streaming services for that time just because we don’t need all that going on.

Hulu with live TV just added the NFL network to whatever level I was already subscribed to. I like it!

Going to give YTTV a shot for football season. I'm worried that our sucky a$$ internet connection out here in the sticks will be a major issue however....
That's the wildcard really. But, as someone who also has a sucky internet connection in the sticks, it hasn't been nearly the issue I was afraid it would be. The good thing is that if it proves to be a problem for you, canceling a streaming service like YTTV is very easy to do.

The free unlimited DVR along with the locals is what's really selling me on YTTV. I rarely ever watch anything live anymore. I usually watch sports now on a small delay to ff commercials.

I already have regular Hulu with the Disney+ bundle along with ESPN+.

I also subscribe to Paramount+ and Discovery+ which I highly recommend, D+ is well worth the $5.00 a month.

Just out of curiosity what do you pay a month for that montage of pay services? I think, unless I'm wrong, you have: YTTV, Hulu, Disney+, ESPN+, Paramount+ and Discovery+

I haven't paid anything on YTTV yet. If I keep it it would be around $70.00 a month give or take. My DirecTV package which still my dad's original account is around $170.00 a month. That's without any addons like HBO, Cinemax etc...

If we decide to cancel that and stick with YTTV that's going to be a good savings.

It's not that bad for just streaming, a little over $20.00 a month. Paramount+ is a one time annual payment.

Paramount+ = $32.91 (one time yearly payment)
The Disney+ bundle (Disney+, Hulu & ESPN+) = $15.32 a month.
Discovery+ = $5.46 a month. (I highly recommend Discovery+, it covers a whole bunch of networks from HGTV, Food Network, Trvl, History, Nat Geo etc..)

I may also add the service Frndly as we really like the Hallmark Christmas films in our house (since Hallmark isn't on YTTV) and I think it's like $8.00 a month for their HD & unlimited DVR plan.

anyone having lip sync (audio not matching video when people talk) issues with YTTV - happening on all my TVs? I see it running a Firestick and built in app on LG OLED tv.

Yes, having the same issue. Thought maybe it was just a roku issue...both my tv's run through roku. My mom, who has YTTV, is having the same problem. I wonder if it has anything to do with the new 4k add on. Didn't they upgrade the audio with that as well? I could be wrong about that though.

I noticed as well. I've had that problem in the past watching things on Hulu it mostly happens after a commercial break when it happens there I can fix it by pausing and rewinding a couple of seconds.

I’ve had the problem with Hulu in the past as well. Currently giving Sling a go and pleased with it so far. User interface and those features could be better, but good for the price and our needs.

I haven't tried that yet, but I definitely will now. Thanks a bunch!
