The worst trades in MLB history

There were other inconsequential players involved, but the primary chips were Mark Langston from Seattle to Montreal for Randy Johnson.

In the short term, it wasn't bad for the Tigers. But in the long term? It was horrible.

Was Smoltz going to help the Tigers win the division in 1987? That's why you trade prospects for veterans. To win immediately. It's not a complex equation.

Thanks for clarifying why you trade prospects. I needed that.

Smoltz couldn't help them in '87, but he could have for about 15 different seasons.

See emains explanation. You're not going to get much without trading potential stars. That's how it works, if you haven't noticed.

Come on, Train. That's crazy talk. The Tigers should have held on to Smoltz and finished 2nd to Toronto in '87. Look how great the Tigers were by the time Smoltz was ready for the bigs. He would have been a huge difference maker on all of those powerhouse Tiger teams in the '90s.

Yeah, Detroit was awesome for most of Smoltz's career. He could have made the difference between 70 and 77 wins a year.

Are you telling me that you would have made that trade had you known the career that Smoltz would go on to have?

If you've got Detroit's roster in 1987, you trade pretty much anything you have in the future for a guy who can help you win then. The cliff that team fell off shortly thereafter bears out how small their window of opportunity to win again with Morris, Whitaker, Trammell, et al was. Exactly what would John Smoltz have added to the Tigers in the '90s? He'd have been in the same position Felix Hernandez is in now.

Obviously, you did. You're welcome.

I'm sure that during the 90s, the Tigers' front office was thinking "You know, that Smoltz guy may be one of the best pitchers in baseball, but I'm do glad that we traded him for a guy that helped us win that division title in '87. Nevermind that we got our asses handed to us in the ALCS, dammit, that division crown was awesome."

I'm not saying that Detroit was stupid to trade him at the time. I'm just saying that they got screwed in the long run.

Not a big fan of the Teixiera to Braves trade. Did not improve the Braves and it sure would be nice to have Andrus, Feliz, and Harrison.

Not to mention they got crap back for him from the Angels.

Good point. They could have had an awful team wth one good pitcher and three extra years on their postseason drought. You've shown me the light.

McGriff to the Atlanta Braves for prospect Vince Moore, Donnie Elliott and Melvin Nieves.

Also, the Tim Hudson deal was horrific for the A's.

How dare you imply that baseball God Billy Beane doesn't get the best of each and every transaction his team is involved in? Heresy.

I remember every Braves media type laughing at the steal we got.

On December 5, 2007, the Marlins traded Miguel Cabrera and starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers for pitchers Andrew Miller, Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop, outfielder Cameron Maybin, and catcher Mike Rabelo

Not one guy panned out for Florida. AND THEY GOT SIX PLAYERS.

That awesome Doyle Alexander went 0-2 with an ERA of 10 in the ALCS.

Maybin is finally starting to figure things out even though he isn't in fla any more.
