Was Smoltz going to help the Tigers win the division in 1987? That's why you trade prospects for veterans. To win immediately. It's not a complex equation.
Come on, Train. That's crazy talk. The Tigers should have held on to Smoltz and finished 2nd to Toronto in '87. Look how great the Tigers were by the time Smoltz was ready for the bigs. He would have been a huge difference maker on all of those powerhouse Tiger teams in the '90s.See emains explanation. You're not going to get much without trading potential stars. That's how it works, if you haven't noticed.

If you've got Detroit's roster in 1987, you trade pretty much anything you have in the future for a guy who can help you win then. The cliff that team fell off shortly thereafter bears out how small their window of opportunity to win again with Morris, Whitaker, Trammell, et al was. Exactly what would John Smoltz have added to the Tigers in the '90s? He'd have been in the same position Felix Hernandez is in now.Are you telling me that you would have made that trade had you known the career that Smoltz would go on to have?

Good point. They could have had an awful team wth one good pitcher and three extra years on their postseason drought. You've shown me the light.I'm sure that during the 90s, the Tigers' front office was thinking "You know, that Smoltz guy may be one of the best pitchers in baseball, but I'm do glad that we traded him for a guy that helped us win that division title in '87. Nevermind that we got our asses handed to us in the ALCS, dammit, that division crown was awesome."

On December 5, 2007, the Marlins traded Miguel Cabrera and starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers for pitchers Andrew Miller, Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop, outfielder Cameron Maybin, and catcher Mike Rabelo
Not one guy panned out for Florida. AND THEY GOT SIX PLAYERS.
