A Tennessee teen outed on social media dies by suicide; support pours in as focus turns to prosecutor
My wife knows the family. This raises more questions about cyber bullying, and bullying in general. Part of me thinks the ones who posted it online should get some punishment. Part of me thinks the kid should have known better than to have sent the texts in the first place. Really sad any way you look at it.
It's hard for me to sympathize with people over the cyber bullying phenomenon. Like you said, I dealt with real bullies. Sometimes I got beat up. Sometimes the bully got a surprise. I think most every guy my age at that I grew up with dealt with the same thing. Sometimes the gym teacher or a coach would make us fight it out at school just to put an end to something that was festering. People got hurt but nobody died, nobody showed back up at school with a gun, and nobody went home and killed themselves. I don't get it.I know some families that have a good system of not letting this happen to their kids. They severely limit online presence, or eliminate altogether. House rules. I don't mean any disrespect to this family or others. It's sad a teen feels they have to take their own life to deal with bullying, or that others feel it makes them look cool to pick on those who cannot or will not stand up to it. But as a whole us parents don't exercise much parenting in some areas. I'm guilty of not restricting my son's online presence more than I do, but he also doesn't seem to be too "out there" either.
I remember seeing kids in high school intervening when someone was helplessly getting picked on. And the ones bullying didn't want anything to do with the one stepping in. Wasn't a regular occurence, but saw it several times over the 4 years. Could use more of that these days.
I don't advocate fighting per se. But, I do advocate defending yourself. I was one who kind of got along with anyone in high school. Not many enemies. But on a couple occasions, I had to take a stand. And that ended it. My best friend was small, but very scrappy. Big oafs tried to bully him a lot. He didn't take but a couple seconds of it, and the other guys were usually on the ground getting their face pounded. Of course, knowing my brother and his friends reps, and him them being Seniors when I was a Soph, It's possible I had invisible protection I wasn't aware of.
