Ok, first and foremost, I am not a DAWG fan. I bleed orange and white. Will somebody please tell me how the #1 preseason ranking became so screwed up? I will give Florida, LSU and even Ohio State(afterall they have been beaten by SEC teams in the BCS game the last 2 seasons) some respect. I dont know how a team that lost a combined 86-47 to the boys in orange from 2006/7 warrant that respect to be automatically considered a #1.
Lets break this down
UGA has Richt Vols have Fulmer- Vols have won a Natl title with Fulmer- Advantage VOLS
QB's Vols have Crompton and Dawgs have Stafford.
Although Crompton is highly heralded, and did a decent job being put into the fire in 2006 against Arkansas and LSU, I will have to give this one to Matthew Stafford, although without many proven targets, Crompton would take this category. I will asterisk this advantage *Dawgs
Running Backs
Ok I will give this one to UGAs Knowshown Moreno, although Arian Foster has a chance to break Travis Henry's alltime rushing record-Advantage DAWGS
Wide Recievers-
Vols have G Jones, L Taylor, Ahmad Paige, D Moore, Austin Rogers, etc etc UGA has, um well, do cheerleaders count? Advantage VOLS
Tight Ends-
I dont really know too much about UGA tight ends, but will have to say Brandon Warren, welcome to the SEC and welcome to TN. This guy is a monster, Jeff Cottam? Who is that? It has already been stated that Warren is doing great things. He also has his head on a swivel. Advantage-VOLS
Offensive Line-
Advantage VOLS enough said about the group bringing about every one back with the exception of one, who also gave up the fewest sacks in the nation last season.
Defensive Line-
There is a lot of talent on both teams, but I think I will give this to UGA, as UT will have to cast some unsung heroes as they do year in and year out. Great thing about UTs youth, they will only get better. Advantage for now-DAWGS
Linebackers- Well this seems a repeat from the DL unit, but Tennessee has one proven starter, Rico McCoy, and hopefully he will start where Jerrod Mayo left off, punishing quarterbacks and running backs.
I hope highly touted Chris Donald and Marlon Walls are utilized this season. That would be a beast of a LB core. Not since Ohio State had Hawk, Shlegel and Carpenter has there been that great of a LB tandem in all of College Football. Advantage for now* DAWGS
Secondary-
Vols have set the standard this season with the best secondary in the SEC if not the entire nation. Returning is youngster Eric Berry, who will only get better, and is being compared to a Natl Champ Vol, Deion Grant. Also returning is reinstated Demetrice Morley, who seems to have his act together. Brent Vinson, Marsalous Johnson, Antonio Gaines, DeAngelo Willingham and Dennis Rogan anchor the CB positions. There is lots of depth at this position, and if the Vols dare opposing QBs to beat them with their passing games, then the Vols might have a feast of interceptions this season.
Advantage-VOLS
Special teams-Advantage VOLS
Even though Britton "DUI" Colquitt is suspended for the first meaningful 5 games of the season, Chad Cunningham should provide futile as a temporary starter. Besides, Chad has had a great summer camp. He outpunted Britton in that scrimmage held a few weeks ago. Daniel Lincoln besides Auburns kicker, is by far the top 3 kickers in the SEC and is probably top ten in the nation. Mr Clutch enabled the Vols to beat SC and a last second nailbiter to Vandy. He helped ensure Fulmers presence for another season, that is for sure.
PR/KR- Advantage VOLS
So in closing, with UT being mediocre in the talent pool, but slowly regaining their talent of the 90s, how does one rate UGA, the underachievers of the SEC as a # 1 preseason pick? They have arguably one of the toughest skeds in the nation, have to play the SEC Beast(East), and then a few turds over in the Western Division, that spells a few Ls if you ask me. I think if they do cruise undefeated by the Oct 11 showdown with the Vols, UT being the always lovable underdog, will play over their heads, crushing UGA for a third straight year. I dont think if UT were go get ahead, UGA could come back strictly on the wheels of Moreno. Heres to wishing Mohammed Massaqoui a better year. Highly touted, severely overrated, just like those preseason #1 Georgia Bulldogs!!!
