It’s the kiss of death. We have fans post these bold statements days before a game, then the Vols fail to meet those expectations. I’m not predicting a win or a loss, certainly wanting a win of any size. I may be a pessismist, but to make a statement like the OP is pure homerism and not based on what we have seen from the ‘23 Vols on the road.
If you don't think momentum exists in football, you can go hang out with Gary Danielson. He doesn't either.
If it makes you feel better, Lexington is about as much of a road game for the Vols as Nashville/Vandy.The immediate problem with momentum right now is that UT has only played 2 true road games this year and lost them both rather embarrassingly. If you extend it back to last year's USC game then it's 3 out of the last 4 but really is Vandy a true road game? If you don't think the players know that more than they know how UT has historically played against UK, there may be a problem. I'm definitely not predicting a loss, but these games especially at night are a concern to me until THIS team shows the maturity to win them.
Going back to this same time last year, outside of neutral site games and games in Nashville both of which allow for massive UT fan presence, the last time UT won a true road game was last year's Missouri game and we've lost the other 4 games.
Agreed. But be careful - I tried to warn a couple of those fans before the Bama game based on what I’d seen this year and was accused of bad-mouthing the Vols and told to go find another team to root for. It’s the kiss of death. That was two years ago. We beat Missouri at home last year. The exception by the doofus was quite an exception...unfortunately. I think as many low points as our program had in the last 13-14 years, that probably qualifies as the lowest. We beat the Kentucky Kittens in Lexington just about as easily as in Knoxville. Here's proof:
1979 to 1991 - Johnny Majors beat the Wildcats in their own stadium six different times. Ouch.
1993 to 2007 - Philip Fulmer never lost to Kentucky. That includes eight, count 'em, 8, trips to Lexington. Heh.
2009 - He was barely our head coach a week, and yet Lame Kiffin was still able to take Kentucky down at their home, 30-24 (in OT)
2013 and 2015 - Butch Jones brick-by-bricked the Wildcats in their own house--sorry, I mean grocery store--twice...one game 27-14, the other 52-21
2019 - cornbread lover Jeremy Pruitt went into Kentucky and brought home a win, 17-13
2021 - with a decimated roster, Josh Heupel marched into Lexington and beat the #18 Wildcats, 45 to 42. Ouch for them, that was "their year"
I could've gone back even further (for instance, Bill Battle went to Lexington and brought home a W three times in his moderately brief tenure), but it's kinda all Vols just about as far as the eye can see.
For those counting them up, yes. With one doofus of an exception, every single Tennessee head coach in the modern era has beaten Kentucky at their place. Often, they did so repeatedly. Almost always, in fact. Right at 90% of the time (18 of the last 20 in Lexington).
We're gonna stomp them in Aisle 15 of the Lexington Kroger mart this Saturday. Not only because we're the better team with better talent and better coaches. But also, it's a tradition.
Go Vols!
And that was a very early game, not on the same intensity level as a night game there. We play a rested Kentucky team at night on the road. To the fans, a win makes the season. This Kentucky team beat the gators who we lost to on the road. KY's QB has greatly underperformed expectations this season. Stop me if you've heard this before! Kid is probably poised for a career night with the Vols defense expecting all run and missing Hadden. That was two years ago. We beat Missouri at home last year. Hadden will be missed but the defense still has a viscous pass rush. And that was a very early game, not on the same intensity level as a night game there.
