How do McD AAs all of a sudden not know how to shoot ?
This could possibly be the question of the year.
(decade? century?)
There is no mystery. Shooting is an acquired skill. You work at, you practice it, and you'll get better at it. You don't work at it, you don't practice it, then you get worse at it. In the OP's message, the head coach was quoted as saying she doesn't care if they hit a shot and and they don't practice it: "I don't care if they hit a three; I don't care if they hit a shot,". "All I care about is getting down and playing defense." "We haven't spent a lot of time shooting the basketball...". "...we haven't been doing a lot of shooting in practice."
There is no mystery. The head coach doesn't care, puts no emphasis on it, doesn't practice it. This is why they can't shoot.
There is a little bit of mystery. NCAA place restrictions on many contact hours coaches can have with players. So practice time is at premium. Usually this time is devoted to team-based drills (working through offensive and defensive sets) with a small window (if any) to work practice skills in a concentrated way.
So, players have to find time between classes and official practices to work on their shots other skills, and also do the requisite strength training, etc. That investment in becoming a quality player takes a lot of time management and dedication. I don't know but I suspect that may be where some of the deficiencies lie. Getting in the extra work is the player responsibility but you can also question of the team culture is one where such investments are seen as being necessary.
