Our 3 year old blue tick beagle started collapsing and having issues breathing in March. After couple visits with our vet and then being sent to a specialist, Rocky was diagnosed with non-regenerative anemia. His body was not generating red blood cells likely due to his bone marrow (all other intrenal issues and cancer ruled out) and he was given 50/50 on survival.
Vet started him on 3 medications, said if his numbers kept dropping, he would have to have a transfusion. Normal red blue cell count is 35-55 for dogs. Rocky was at 18. Last week he finally increased to 21. This Wednesday he increased to 24. This is due to the meds.
Just got a call from the vet as he sent the bloodwork off for testing, confirmed his numbers were increasing and that his bone marrow is now producing red blood cells on his own!!
While we are not out of the woods yet or where he needs to be, this is great news and vet wants us to follow up in two weeks in hopes to see a bit bigger number and to start tapering his medicine!
A blurry picture from the vet this week, but his demeanor has definitely improved this week!
Such happiness today with Rocky!
