LSU Notes: Coordinator responds to 'Third-and-Chavis' tag | shreveporttimes.com | Shreveport Times

I thought this was an interesting article about something we're all well acustomed to talking about, especially the last few years....

"There was some John or Joe or Jack or Bill several years ago, and he couldn't find a lot to be critical of so he wanted to be critical of our third-down production. So that's fine. And let me just tell you where we are, OK."

I wonder if the Chief was refering to John Adams of KNS? If I was a betting man I'd say yes.

 Yeah, because Adams came up with that. Oh wait, he's actually never even used it....

I never said Adams came up with the name, but you can't say he was never critical of Chavis. It's no secret there was no love between Adams and the old crew so I just thought it was a neat coincidence.

Chavis on first and second down could be one of the greatest defensive guys i have seen and then on third down he throws it all away. I never understood that.

"We need to improve that and our third-and-medium (3 to 6 yards)," Chavis said, but he did not share the numbers. "We were really not very good in that area."

Sounds familiar. He fielded some extremely stout defenses during his tenure in Knoxville, but there were points where everyone in the stadium knew the other team was going to convert the 3rd down.

There's no love between Adams and UT--Period. To him, his job is just that. A job. He's an LSU homer that could care less, which is why you never see him writing negative pieces about LSU. He'll write them about every other school in the SEC except UT, and then say, "My job is to report on sports." Yes it is, John. On goVOLSxtra.com. :banghead2:

Here in Baton Rouge, when Chavis first came to LSU, fans were squinting at him dubiously, but he has their grudging acceptance for now, mainly because the offense floundered worse last year. But they are restless and know a talented DL underachieved for them last year. They know the term "third and Chavis" and will not hesitate to unleash it, given an excuse to do so.

I wonder what Chavis would do should the Miles era at LSU end after this year? Many are saying its possible.

Maybe Fulmer, who is in OJT as a financial consultant/adviser (and who will always be in OJT), could hook Chavie up with his firm.

3rd and Chavis came from the fans... not some some fishwrap writer.

I can't say I was pleased when LSU hired Chavis, but on the opposite side of that he was able to come in and stabilize the defense. He has a great scheme on 1st and 2nd but absolutely kills you on 3rd, I would say this is a fact. LSU was top notch until 3rd down came around, it was very hard to watch.

Some of the trouble was the scheme and part of it is his unwillingness to change if he doesn't have the personnel. Basically, LSU lack speed on the edges on 3rd and longs last year, I think that will change this year but I would have to generally agree with the Third and Chavis until he proves he can stop the opponent from getting first downs.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this part. We said the same thing for years waiting on it to happen.

Generally agree. The reason I said that is, I think we have the personnel now to get major pressure on the QB in 3rd downs with 4. Mingo and Montgomery red-shirt freshman will be playing the Ends on 3rd down and long, they were both unblockable in the spring game so I hold some hope.

We'll see, I have a little hope going into the year. I don't think QBs are going to get a ton of time this year with Mingo and Montgomery in there this year.

you will not, ever as an LSU fan have a line as good as a few of those that Chavis had at UT, and he still managed to look silly on third down or late in games because of his Mustang stupidity.

After watching Chavis as DC for many, many years, you'll come to root for 3rd and short instead of 3rd and long. I never understood why (other than soft DB coverage), but he seems to be much better at stopping 3rd and 4 or less than he is at stopping 3rd and 5+.

I can literally remember watching games in the 2006-2008 seasons hoping for the opposing RB to gain 4 yards to get it to 3rd and 2, because I had much more faith that the D could pull off the 3rd down stop in those short yardage situations.

Oh wow that mustang package that cost us the GA game in 2001. How you let a freshman qb run down the field with 46 sec left in the game is beyond me especially having that D we had that year. Not to mention up the middle every play Matt Mauck in the sec champ game. Good lord how hard is it to put a spy on him. every play up the middle.

and those teams had probably the best defensive line the conference has seen, including the AL 1992 squad.

that defense we had was just plain ferocious but lame play calling cost us those 2 games. I would of loved to see us play Miami that year.

It's 3rd and 5. Where are our corners? Oh yeah, they're back there with the safties. Twelve yards off the line of scrimmage.

Nothing in the history of Tennessee's defense has frustrated me like seeing the corners so backed off.
