This class gets us over the top

I think we did good. Stars can sometime be overrated & filling needs is just as, or more important than ✨ a lot of times. Hope this Jennings thing isn't too bad...

Needs and stars aren't mutually exclusive.

When you don't force players out and actually develop the talent you will sign smaller classes. You will also have more JRs and SRs which more years in the program leads to better players. When you are not very good at evaluations you better sign about 30 a year.

Only reason to be signing huge classes all the time is if your talent is leaving early to the NFL. See places like Bama.

"If I sign maybe 46 I might luck out and get a few ball players".

Signed
Butch.

Can you please just change your name to "I'dLikeToCrunchDabo'sBallz"

I'd like to see us win more and recruit better. I'll leave the testicle play to you.

TIFWIW

Well you're the one that seems to be all over Dabo's balls in about 90% of your posts, so I'll leave the testicle play to you. Why don't you just make your life less miserable and become a full-time Clemson fan and move on to one of their message boards.

You can't truly judge a class until 3 years down the road so the jury is still out on this class for me. It's not a flashy class, but look at some of UTs most star studded classes and you'll notice a lot of those guys didn't pan out or transferred due to lack of playing time. We really needed to just build quality depth and I can see a lot of these kids from this class staying 4 or 5 years and providing that depth.

Today the class seems disappointing. I do think we did well to fill holes at running back, offensive line, kicker, and linebacker. Those were big needs. The rest are filled with guys who will offer depth at the very least. I wish we had more guys that could step right in and make a big difference though.

Step right in...
How many of these guys are there every year? The Bamas and Ohio Sts. Get 5* guys, how many step right in? Now don't tell me they must wait on a 5* to leave. If they are good enough, they step right in. Step right ins are few any given year. Even most of the best high schoolers need time to grow physically and adapt to the college game.

You don't want any freshmen to "step right in." That means you have a gaping hole in your depth.

Crunchy got all hot and bothered by this IMO.

In most cases this is true. It depends on the player, the position, and the coach.

Bama seems to have a couple or so every year that crack the starting lineup and 2 deep even with the 3 classes before them being loaded with talent.

Having a class of 14 is really bad management, even if that was their aim, and could come back to bite them in a few years.

Don't just take kids to be taking them. If they take several next year and back count they will be good. Now if they only take a similar amount next year I agree they can't afford to have misses. That was Kiffins problem at USC. With those scholarship restrictions. 15 scholarships a year gave no room for error after a couple of those small classes compiled.

:yes:I know a lot of you played football for at least four or more years, but certainly not all of you who're posting on VN. I do respect the views of MOST of you, regardless of your actual experiences on the gridiron, so see if this makes sense: Butch's O-line has finally got some talented depth, partly due to recruiting but also due to injuries causing untimely RSs along with various and sundry other "hold-backs." This new class has the nation's #1 O-lineman (Smith, a 5*) and a coveted 4*O-lineman (Locklear). Finally the bricks are up there for a formidable SEC O-line in 2017. Who're those other bricks that'll be back? They're Boulware, Richmond, Thomas, Hall, Jones, Kendrick, Tatum and Mosley. Running between those bigger holes will be a real-deal SEC stud in Kelly, with Fils Aime's readiness assured and newby 4* Chandler expected to push those guys from day one. Now...from what I've heard and read, RBs Jordan and Coleman are both considered sleepers; late discoveries by scouts who caught on to these top-tier powerful, fast and instinctual runners whose flying under the radaris all that kept their *s down. The same's true for 3* WR Palmer and 3* DB Jackson. They're going to make this recruiting class far better than the dubious 11th to 17th team rankings, due also to the DB 3* sleeper Palmer's currently higher esteemed DB classmates 4*s Bailey and Gray. With the addition of 4* Ignont, UT's LB corps will be so loaded it'll be sick. Who'll be there? How's 'bout DKJ, Sapp, Bituli, Jumper, Bryant, Berry, Bynum, Bates, McDowell and Knoll? On the DL, DTs Tuttle, K-Mack, Picou, Vickers, Mixon, Bain and Johnson...all strong leaders for 4*DT Barnett and for the DE spots, 4*DE Bumphus will immediately begin practicing with the likes of Smith, Taylor, Butcher, Kongbo and Phillips. Has anybody caught any dropoffs, yet? UT will better its already excellent kicking game for team 121, as well as the aforementioned improvements. BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE! Three weaknesses within the coaching staff were those who're training DBs, QBs and S&C. Right? These, also, have been ably addressed (in the opinions of those of us who've actually put some years into the sport). No way did UT win the NSD beauty pageant, but I hope those of you who're counting stars as opposed to using the old-timey method of cherry-picking the best fellas possible to fill the needs at hand...in UT's case those like those previously named...and I think you'll catch on that the glitches in teams 119 and 120 have been addressed and we can expect more far more smiles in Knoxville in 2017. AMIRIGHT?

I'd take that bad management if the trade off leading up to it is two straight National title games and National Championship.

Based on what we saw at many positions last year, I'd say we do indeed have some gaping holes in our depth, especially on defense.

Fills our needs, and is full of players who will almost all be on the 2-deep early In their careers...

There are some stars in this class too. The Kicker. The OL. The LB.

They got more players from LA and FL, talent rich states.

The coaches board doesn't follow star systems... so if we don't know their board then we really don't know how good they think they did.

Too many are worried here about stars even when those players leave... need to create a New before/ after system for rankings.

too late, there is a before and after for recruiting rankings!!! :banghead2:  stop excuse making.

OP - agree. This was an important class overall. Not flashy, but ideal to our needs.

Step in and play - leads to injuries and 'out of position' situations in the complex O and D that we run. I would much rather see some S&C and training development prior to the the SEC level players. Better athletes in the wrong place is worse than the alternatives.
