I've always thought this is how it should be done. Saw it in movies too.

Butch Jones...

Jones made it clear last week he wants to move faster on offense and "challenge that 10-second rule" proposal that made headlines this offseason before it was eventually tabled, but he was disappointed with the slower tempo in Tuesday's practice, the Vols' first in full pads.

Tennessee is using a 20-second play clock for the offense in practice in trying to improve an increased tempo.

"As soon as that 20-second clock goes off, a horn blows," Jones explained. "Then we'll do down-ups for not maintaining the tempo. Today I thought the whole practice, I thought our whole tempo on offense and defense really slowed down. I think that was a byproduct of the pads, but again, we have to learn to work through those things."

Stating the obvious...
Because of the strong dependence on the incoming class, the EEs are going to really benefit by exposure to quick tempo during spring practices. Those joining the team later are going to have to catch up to the tempo. They'd better be mentally prepared!

We know two things:
1.) Our team is going to be in hell of shape
2.) They are going to give more effort than our opponent.

I like CBJ approach to coaching he talks about defining a standard and actually coaches it.

How do we know that? Did we really give more effort than our opponents last year?

This!

Posters on here thought the same thing last year. I think losing has more to do with it than being in shape.

Yeah, and every single off-season for as long as I can recall coming here, I've read that we are going to be in better shape than all of our opponents this year because of a new trainer or a new training regimen or whatnot. And I've never seen it materialize. I guess hope springs eternal, but you would think people would stop making the same definitive pronouncements every year.

For the most part I agree with you.

I do believe that last year's team was in better shape / conditioned than the year prior. Not saying they were in better shape than all their opponents, just improved over the prior year.

You can almost set your watch to the off-season comments/predictions on here.

I have a question for you:

Why are you here, in the middle of off-season?

I see you on here, just about every day, spewing out the same "VN sucks, people shouldn't be optimistic. We sucked last year, we sucked the 5 years before that. Woe is us, we all suck and we always will and my edgy and virulent responses will hold you kool-aid drinking stargazers in check".

Because you're just as recycled as the "this year is going to be different" crowd.

Why don't we just discuss the latest news without your sardonic crowd and then the try-hards looking for grammatical errors in a vain (and usually juvenile) attempt to be funny.

And your BGE avatar is stupid.

That is all, mock away!

The problem is we tend to forget that other teams are working too. We somehow get this mentality that our team is getting better while other programs are staying stagnant or somehow our staff has it all figured out while other staffs are clueless.

Yes, coach Jones is pushing these guys hard. Yes, I like the way he runs practices with the toughness and the fast tempo, etc. I like the way our S&C coach is getting our players bigger, faster, stronger. Guess what? Other programs are doing this too. Other programs that are more talented are doing this too.

It's all hyperbole. It's all offseason optimism and that's fine. You gotta have something to give you hope as a fan.

Those kids gave what they could. It wasn't good enough. We were an average team in a way above average league....especially with the early departure of Bray, Patterson, and Hunter which was all of our offensive production the season before. So do you sometimes go up to less fortunate children and make fun of them for being poor too? Dark and gloomy world of negativity you live in.....shows in every post nearly :cray: just very :cray:

So you really thought we gave more effort than Vanderbilt? Than South Alabama? Than Missouri?

Okay man. I guess every time we lose, it's not because of effort or scheme or gameplan or anything that anyone can control. There's no blame. It's just because there's no way we could possibly win. Poor us, we just have it so much harder than anyone else. We should just be happy with our participation trophies. Got it.

As long as he doesn't show up with an Orange Dog to practice or Monitors Shower Routines I think He will be good to go...

You don't have to come until the season starts. Fans are always going to make definitive pronouncements and your mission is two fold. Figure out who has the expertise to make that determination or adjust accordingly.

Your insights usually contribute nothing to the board except negativity. I like to remain Cautiously Optimistic. Some facts are out there all ready but you chose to ignore them for your benefit to remain negative.

For example, 9 players can now squat over 600 pounds as compared to 0 players ability to do it last year. He mentioned it shows progress in Strength and Conditioning yet you blabber at fans. Why don't you complain to Coach Jones via face to face, email or phone call, he is the one that felt it was a worthy of comment. It is an indication of progress. You feel comfortable enough to sit behind a computer and trash talk progress, well your choice which is a reflection of who you are.
nine of his players can squat over 600 pounds, something none of the Vols could do last spring.
