After all that we have been through over the course of the last five years, the skeptical part of me considers it purely coachspeak, but it is nice to hear someone other than a native son of the Volunteer State describe the Tennessee head coaching position as his "dream job." Coach Jones did so in the course of his introductory press conference and, according to Dave Hart, did so approximately 20 minutes into their initial conversation.

Originally, I was as enthusiastic about this hire as I would be at the prospect of consuming burnt toast or Peptobismol. However, like several other contributors to this forum, I have become a bit more receptive after conducting research. As Hart observed, Coach Jones has won conference championships in four of the six years he has been head coach. Granted, the SEC is a BIG step up from his former level of competition but he has won championships at two different programs.

It has already been posted elsewhere, but it is interesting to note Butch Jones' preseason position in the Sporting News ranking of college coaches (College football coach rankings: Nos. 26-75 - NCAA Football - Sporting News ). Jones came in 28th, 23 spots ahead of Charlie Strong. In comments pertaining to his achievements at Cincinnati thus far, it was said that "Jones cleaned house in Year 1, dealt with significant injuries and had some wondering about him after a three-win debut. Now look: 10 wins in 2011 from a team that probably shouldn’t have reached that high. Next problem for UC: keeping Jones. He won at CMU, he's winning at Cincy. Another big season should lead to a big BCS job (hello, Tennessee)."

As a postscipt to their analysis, a NFL scout was quoted as saying that "If you’re just looking at the surface, you see him winning with what Brian Kelly built. Don’t believe that garbage. He can coach. He was one of those guys a few years ago where you just knew big things were coming his way. He’s not done, either. Not by a longshot

Yes, the more research I've done and more people I've talked to, leads me to believe this was a good hire. Not "HOMERUN" type, but I believe he will get the job done.

Welcome to Big Orange Country, Coach Jones!

It's like any other coach we bring in.. Recruiting will be key.. I think he's a upgrade in the coaching department over Dooley. Recruiting is what i worry about with Jones..

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isnt TN sitting on 799 Wins? Could Coach Jones Carry us into the 800 win catagory! Only Bammer has more wins than TN in the SEC! I think this fella will do just fine! Welcome to The BIG ORANGE coach Jones!

Yes, it would behoove him to retain Jay Graham as a position coach, recruiter and someone who is thoroughly familiar with Tennessee and the SEC landscape as both a player and coach. And it would not hurt to go after Tee Martin as well.

I agree that he is a coaching upgrade over Dooley and share your concerns about recruiting. I'm also interested to see what kind of staff he assembles. If he can pull a great coaching staff, we could be in business.

I don't really agree with the list but I was in contact with people from both central MI and UC today. One a prominent person in the automotive industry with intimate knowledge of CMU and a second closely tied with the UC admin.

Like you, at first I was a little distraught about the hire. After my conversations, I'm excited he accepted.

Dooley did leave him with a few players that he'll get credit for sending to the NFL.
He sent 4 from Cincy this draft 1rst 4 rounds.
That will help recruiting.

After my conversations I have zero doubt he can be a "homerun hire" (depending on your definition). I now see him as a Bruce Pearl for football without the ncaa issues (and maybe even Hyams won't be butthurt).

My UC contact said he called Tee, BTW.

That's good to hear about Tee. Now, if only Coach Jones can find a Gary Patterson-caliber defensive coordinator. Any names come to mind, guys?

I think Jones is a very solid coach. Grats to all you Vols on a real coaching hire.

He going to say what he has to, but I bet when he came up to Knoxville on Sept 10th 2011 as Cincinnati's Coach, he probably couldn't help dreaming about coaching on the opposite sideline that day.

My law partner (a native of Cincy and a UC grad) seemed to need Prozac and was in a particularly foul humor after hearing that we had hired HCBJ. So maybe Hart and Mr. Limpett did alright with this hire.

More than likely every fan will get what they want from CBJ. He will either turn the program around in a few years which many want and then leave for a bigger job, or he will fail and be fired. Either way, IMO, he will most likely be gone in a few years which many want. Hopefully, it's after a few good years.
