14 teams, at least 8-9 recruit top 25 level talent most years now. In the East alone, UF, UGA, UT and SC are recruiting top 15 type classes every year. In the West, Bama, Aub, LSU, aTm, doing the same. OM, MSU and Mizzou doing well also, and lately even KY bringing in good classes. The old days of Just 5-6 teams in the conference dominating recruiting are being replaced with more teams in the mix now.

Things only get harder for everyone going forward, this is a new age in the SEC and CFB in general. New offenses, new playoff format, and new rivalries being made by the updated schedules. Bama's dominance seems unbreakable right now, but this new age league will ensure turnover at the top and cycles that most cannot predict currently. Winning a division championship, let alone a conference championship takes on new meaning, measurably harder than in the old days.

IMO, teams will run through cycles based upon schedules and rosters that have experience etc. which will lead to turnover in who is on top in any given year. Winning divisions and conference championships annually or almost annually will be extremely hard. While Saban is at Bama, they have the best chance, but even they fight for both each year right now and they are getting the top class every year.

Don't forget about Vanderbilt. That impressive 2 year run has them on the cusp of being title contenders every..... No I can't bring myself to finish that statement.

Just be thankful you're in the East at the moment. Half of the current AP Top 10 play in the SEC West.

This conference is just brutal.

In 2002 9 SEC teams were in the top 25 recruiting with Bama being 30th. I just went back as far as Rivals has data.

I'd argue that this isn't a new phenomenon at all.

Agreed. This has been the SEC since at least 2010. Just some teams stay on top (Bama) while others fluctuate (OM, Miss State, Auburn) I know auburn doesn't seem likely but between 2010 and 2014 they had 1 or two 3-9 seasons

Much longer than that. I posted 2002 and just looked at 2003 and 7 of the top 11 schools are current members of the SEC (A&M included). Bama was 49th.

Concur - will be much harder to win a conference championship these days

But on the same token, if you're good enough to win the conference, you're likely good enough to win a National Championship

I can. ....every 100 years or so. Because they suck.

as our VOLS, auburn, and atm continue to rise and knock off bama on a regular basis (it will happen...1 of the 3 of us will beat them this yr GO VOLS) bamas recruiting willstart to slip...i think kids only go there right now because they are sold on the chance to win it all. When kids see that they can beat bama while at UT, saban has nothing left to sell. Kids dont care about past accomplishments much. They care about the present and the future. I dont think Bamas pro style offense and vanilla, big LB , cover 2 defense will hold up with out a team full of 5* players. Couple of classes that arent so stellar and bamas dropping 3 games a year like everyone else IMO

I agree OP except this is an SEC only anomaly, the rest of the CFB world can't keep up with the talent we are getting.

Our TV contracts give us more national exposure than other conferences. The southeast region is rich in talent. The SEC dominance in the BCS era and the NFL drafting SEC kids over others has given us the advantage in national recruiting as well.

Yes it makes it more difficult to win but it just makes it that much sweeter when we do.

The conference is only getting better. Makes it harder to come back once you're down.

South Carolina! :thud:

Get that all the time, he he. Again, West Point grad, ties to both UT and SC as well, all good, was trying to point out a CFB issue, focused on the SEC in particular, some posters just cannot engage in a normal conversation without showing their dark side. NP, but the premise remains, this is a new SEC with aTm, Mizzou and others that are recruiting well, and it is definately a harder job today than it was 20 years ago to win this conference.

You're also neglecting the increase in general roster turnover many teams will have (of juniors, along with their seniors) as you see the number of early entrants jumping to the NFL staying around what we saw at the end of last season.
