A tribe was granted permission to kill 2 bald eagles for religious ceremonies.

Wyoming Native American Tribe Gets Rare Permit To Kill Bald Eagles | Fox News

I can see how any group can make an argument for or against this. Religous freedom, government regulation, differential treatment - this case has it all!

I don't have a real opinion but I'll go ahead and say I'm against because Obama did it :)

What say the VN?

If they are talking about killing the very symbol of American freedom and strength, then I'm against it, but if they are talking about killing a large raptor who preys on small pets and cuddly farm animals, then I'm all for it.

But seriously, I think allowing a small number of "takes" and actually adhering to the rules you publish is a good thing. I'm surprised this is happening now, under the current administration, but then again, not really.

Bald Eagles are not endangered anymore, so it's not like they killed a condor.

I agree but you and I can't kill one for any reason. Why allow a select few to kill them but not others? Another issue is why acknowledge a waiver for religious reasons in this area but not in another area?

As I said, it's a weird and multifaceted issue.

Allow this for all tribes that use for religious ceremony?

His lack of respect for American tradition pours through in every decision he makes.

This is just another.

Yes, it is just a bird. But if any President was going to let it happen it would be him.

There are so many ways to make a good argument against killing a bald eagle for any reason, but you managed to spin it into silliness.

Clearly, if he hates America... he's going to wait until this kind of opportunity to present itself to illustrate said hatred with the utmost discretion.

It goes back to this country's unexplainable ties to spirituality and how much it condones whatever accommodations come with them.

Well, we already harvest any dead eagles that are found, place them in a repository and allow people to request various parts for their ceremonies. In my mind, if we all really, really thought the Bald Eagle was a sacred symbol then we would have some sort of burial ceremony for any that we found. Since we don't, then it is a symbol in name only, which I'm okay with, and we should consider prudent management of the population. There are about 10000 breeding pairs (American Bald Eagle Information) in North America so it appears the population is large enough to consider issuing a limited number of permits each year. I'm okay with issuing them primarily to Native Americans to use for their religious or cultural needs.

First, I seriously doubt that Obama actually played any personal role in this decision. Way beneath his pay grade.

Second, it was under Georgey boy that the bald eagle was taken off the threatened list, lowering the level of protection. By your logic, that is Bush's fault.

Third, if you bothered to look into the facts before you started with your usual uninformed tripe, you would have learned that this was the culmination of a legal fight that started in 2006, when a member of the tribe killed one of the birds without a permit.

A federal judge dismissed the charge, noting that federal regulations authorized permits to tribes, even though practically speaking they weren't given out.

That means that there were regulations, in place during the Bush administration, that allowed this very permit to be issued. And yet you mindlessly complain that Obama is somehow at fault.

You have proven once again that you have simply no clue what you are talking about.

All the republicans have to do is trot out an eagle at a contrived press conference made to look like a congressional hearing and get the bird's point of view.

Bush sucked ass...let's be clear about this.

I am no fan of Bush JR or SR. My favorite President was Reagan and then Clinton. Obama just makes Bush look good which is even more amazing.

But last I checked this is now happening under Obama.

how is it the US will accede to an Indian tribe in this matter (rightly so), but it won't under any circumstances allow a college mascot even when the local tribes have repeatedly given their blessings?
