It goes back to this country's unexplainable ties to spirituality and how much it condones whatever accommodations come with them.

Do you really believe that? I mean, I can see why you disagree with it, but you really think it is inexplicable? The mass immigrations to this country for religious freedom (of sorts), both during the colonial era and then later in the mid 20th century leap to mind. Religious accommodation is a foundational piece of our cultural ethos.

Now, you can argue that it shouldn't be, but I can't see how you can argue that it isn't.

I should have been more specific in the sense that a lot of policy stances are BOUND to religious conviction. Religious freedom is great, but basing policy off religion is not only different, but it seems to be inherently evil in its use (nowadays).
