This Week's Trap...

Saturday's slate isn't much. Harvard-George Mason, Weber State-Utah State, and Detroit-New Mexico are pretty much the extent of the interesting games.

ETSU returns 5 seniors (4 of them starters) and a hell of a scorer that was out with injury during the tourney last year that UK did not see. Not predicting it, but wouldn't be surprised one bit to see a game like Miami (OH) last season. If Cal has their attention, it shouldn't be an issue.

Was wondering how much of that tourney team ETSU returned when I saw UK opened with them. Great opener for both teams. What's the consensus among UK fans on this one?

The bulk of our fanbase being Homers, most are confident in a blowout. Several beat/blog writers and several others with a level head (including myself) are a bit worried, or perhaps anxious to see how UK handles this game.

ETSU loves to press, but in the tourney we beat it easily with Wall/Bledsoe. This team has not proven (although there has been no opportunity) that it can beat pressure. Also, we just over-powered ETSU down low in the tourney, and we we have little to no advantage there without Kanter. Furthermore, Eloy Vargas' father passed away and it has not be released yet whether or not he will be available for the opener. Lots of questions marks, but win or lose I'm ready to see them get on with their maturation.

I'm very interested to see how Danny and Bobby Hurley do at Wagner and how Martelli rebounds from last year with 5 true freshman.

It'll take the Hurleys some time to get players that can win at that level. St. Joe's, as usual, plays a tough nonconference schedule. It won't take long to figure out how good they are going to be.

Wagner is certainly a massive rebuilding job but one would think with their name (Hurley) recognition and ties to the area they should be able to get some quality players.

St Joe's has some good athletes but when comparing them to 'Nova they physically look like a high school team (which isn't far surprising as young as they are). I could see them getting manhandled at times this year.

Wagner will be at the top of the Northeast in two years.

St. Joe's should be really good in '12-'13.

Memphis has a home game Monday night with an 11pm tipoff against "The U". Miami is not supposed to be that strong this year but we are notoriously bad when tipoffs are moved from the normal evening slot. It is a home game though so I dont expect a scare but nothing would surprise me with the youth we have.

Wow. Is attendance pretty good?

I remember a pretty big crowd. Let me see if I can find the actual number. Considering this will be our first "real" home game (we play Centenary tomorrow), I would assume it will be packed.

ESPN's reported attendance was 18,254 which is only a few short of capacity. You have to take into perspective that we were a projected Final four team that year with Derrick Rose playing his first real home game and John Calipari was squaring off with his long time friend and former Tiger assistant coach Derek Kellogg for the first time. I wouldnt expect that big of a crowd Monday but I wouldnt be shocked with 14-16k

St. Joe's got beat down 98-70 @ home against WKU. The Hawks started three freshman... looks like it's going to be a long year on Hawk Hill.

So is WKU that good or is St. Joes that bad right now? We have WKU in a few weeks.

I know very little about WKU but they are usually a good mid-major.

St Joe's has talent but most of that is the freshman class they just signed. They are heavy on freshman and sophomores so it will be a long year.

If you remember, WKU made the sweet sixteen a few years ago with Courtney Lee. They are a great launching pad for coaches (Willard, Felton, Horn, etc), and recruit better that any other sun-belt school.

They have three great seniors that can play, Kerusch, Pettigrew and Pattilo. Kerusch is from Memphis, and put up 31 against St. Joes.

They have beaten the SEC regularly in the OOC schedule the last few years, with wins over Louisville as well. They can play with the big boys on any given night, but are a solid mid-major. Once Billy Gillispie UK recruit Vinny Zollo is signing with them for next season as well.

I wonder if Darrin Horn regrets leaving WKU. I mean, the paycheck is nice, but they could make the tourney every year and they can recruit well.

I doubt he regrets it at all, because quite frankly he didn't have much of a choice. From the outside things obviously seemed great, sweet sixteen and all that came with it. However, his relationship with the AD (and more importantly the Boosters/Unlimited funding via local Houchens Corp) had detiorated to level where it was unable to be salvaged. Chances are, Horn was on his way out whether it be USCjr or another school. FWIW, WKU has/had the funds available to match SC's offer.

I didn't know about the AD situation. Well, Horn had a good first year, but a lot of that is Devan Downey. I don't know if he is able to compete with UK/UT/UF.

Western is in the Puerto Rico tournament this week. That'll be a pretty good barometer for them.
