This year, I would choose Men’s Basketball

If I was told that only one UT team could win a National Championship in 2025, and all other teams would not be able to win one, I would choose Men’s Basketball. Historically, I would choose football first and I would love to see Tony win another one, but for this year, I would choose Men’s Basketball. I really would love to see Rick finally reach the mountain top at the end his career and if we somehow get a 1 seed, I think this may be the best opportunity to give it a go. How about the rest of you, would you be willing to sacrifice Football, baseball, other sports if it meant a guaranteed Basketball Natty? I think there will be plenty more opportunities for Vitello, and Heupel, and for some reason I’m getting emotional about BB as the window of opportunity is getting smaller each year.

I hope they win it all. But i do worry about the lack of depth on this team. Your playing like 7 guys. The SEC and NCAA tourney, those games where you only get one day off. The SEC you get no days off. And sometimes you get the ref that wants to be the show. Calls some picky fouls.

Hopefully we can avoid Pat Adams and Doug Shows!

I would like to see it but I just don't see it happening this year and this Saturday will probably end the 1 seed hope.

Jesus dude, what does this team have to do in order for fans to have a touch of confidence in them?

It isn't like we are 12 games under .500 playing two 5'2 freshman as post players. We are 23-5 and ranked higher than Bama. You post like we game zero chance.

I hope you’re right. I would guess baseball in your scenario, since TV has shown he can do it and because I think this baseball team is top 3 in terms of raw talent. I’m afraid there are certain matchups that could arise in the NCAAT that would get this basketball team beat.

But I would prefer men’s basketball win it, since we’ve never done that before.

There are a lot of fans out there who don’t understand basketball and think that because we are a defense-first team, we’re not as good as an offense-first team.

A MBB national title is arguably the 2nd most prestigious championship in American college sports behind football, IMO. And there's nothing that captures America like the pageantry of the NCAA Tournament. Would be awesome.
Second most prestigious but hardest to obtain. You’ve gotta be on for 6 games in a row (you could argue 5 since first round games are typically lopsided when you are a 1 or 2 seed). In the baseball tourney you can lose up to 5 games and still win it. Football has gotten more difficult with the playoffs but the most dominant team is still very likely to win. In basketball there’s so much variance from game to game. Matchups are huge in basketball. If you shoot poorly for just one half, that’s enough to send you packing. Last season there were two matchups that we needed to avoid for as long as possible, Purdue and UConn. Of course we ran up against the Ogre, almost took him down but ultimately it sent us home a round earlier than we deserved. And that’s what makes the NCAA tourney so awesome. Single elimination doesn’t always allow for the best team to win but man does it make for the most glorious sporting event ever created.

I can't like this post enough. As a basketball first guy, it's frustrating to try and have intelligent college basketball discussion with many on here who want to apply theories they've adopted in football or compare NCAA Tournament & basketball rankings to the CFP. The old saying, "offense wins games, defense wins championships" puts us in a great position heading into March. As someone who has closely followed college basketball nationally for over 40 years and knows a few of the major figures in the industry, this is the most excited I've been for the Tournament in quite some time.

Confidence erodes because Vols have played more
“half” games lately than full games

Plus your opponent can't be shooting 45-50 percent from 3 even though you are blanketing them on the perimeter. You could play the greatest defense in the world and you lose because everything they threw up went in. And they can't do that for 6 games in a row.

for me personally basketball title >> football titles. I was 6 when we last won in football but there is just something about winning march madness that galvanizes a city

Right now, I will say baseball is the only chance at a Natty. I would say LV Basketball will be in the hunt in the near future. I think softball continues to waste elite pitching with no run support. With the portal, men’s basketball could actually win a title at some point. As far as football, there’s still a few questions with Heupel before we get to the status of OSU and UGA.
