We're fantastically designed and almost perfectly executed. I admit I didn't agree with going for it on the original 4th and 1 but after breaking down the game this morning, I realize the coaches must have known exactly what defense UGA was going to be playing. The first 4th down play goes for 50 yds, the second 4th down only goes for one yard but it was one missed block away from going the distance (James missed his block and it about cost us the first down, go back and watch it and you will see that after his man......there was nothing but open field ahead) , the third 4th down is a play action pass that's wide open and goes for 20 yards. Simply amazing preparation by the coaches.

Other things you might not have noticed:

Consistant attempts to strip the ball while making tackles.

Our cornerbacks are playing really good man to man coverage.

No blown assignments on defense.

Cory Vereen plays with the technique ("makes himself small") that the coaches teach.

Our special teams are outstanding right now.

If you can't see the improvement in this teams performance and attitude from the past few years, you need to get your eyes checked. This coaching staff is like the Jeffersons, it won't be long before we're movin on up! Go Vols

Agreed, the coaching staff was well prepared. Butch said after the game that the team had their best week of practice by far, and it showed

I saw improvement in the second half of the Georgia game. Let's hope that is the new rule, rather than the lone exception compared to how we played for many other games this season. We'll know alot more in the South Carolina game.

And we still need to limit the stupid penalties.

I agree we need to limit stupid penalties but its not like its a major problem of ours. Teams are gonna have some penalties and we've had a lot fewer than most teams IMO.
The types of improvement I'm seeing are because of good habits and habits are hard to break. It doesn't mean we can't have a bad game but improvements have been made and im sure there's more to come.

I have noticed the attempts to strip the ball. While I love it, sometimes you just gotta tackle and put your head or shoulder on the ball.

And I cant remember, maybe it was McNeil, but one of the DBs missed a huge tackle by going for the ball or trying to launch on the guy instead of hitting him with his arms wrappin the dude up.

However, all in all, this defense is head and shoulders above last year's. Sapp is my favorite defensive player right now. His senior season is gonna get him some looks.

Where was this playcalling against Florida or Oregon? That 2nd half s*** came out of nowhere.

People keep saying that but we really didn't run anything that much different, we just executed much better. When your QB finally starts making some plays its a lot easier to "open up the play book".

This is his senior season isn't it?

They weren't ready yet. The playbook is opening up more and more as the season goes along.

Plus, let's be honest, would it have mattered against Oregon? I think not...

I get both of your points, BUT not so fast my friend.

That little WR reverse was a game changer as it made the DE's and LB's pause long enough to get gashed.

So, I get that we are still learning as a team, but that's one damn play that opened up other plays.

I've bashed Worley and ate some crow last Saturday. I pray he and the recievers continue the growth. We can't go without a touchdown in any more halves and expect to win many games. Defensively while there are holes the D has stepped up across the board. Like Palardy our secondary has had a complete resurgence from last year. So needed and so appreciated.

I get the frustration, but calls are about confidence and execution. I don't think we've had much of either on offense. Hopefully the Georgia game changed that.

Nothing more than a speed sweep. We've faked it several times already. I think everything these coaches have done up to this point has been setting up our future opponents. I bet you Worley keeps the ball a few more times against USC and it will work because we haven't done it much.

No point wasting those plays in lost causes. If he had ran it agianst Oregon than UGA would have studied it and had someone ready for the outside toss. What was great was the flip play to the outside, froze the db on the 4th down play action later in the game which allowed that play to go for big yardage.

I wish that we would have gotten one sack on a key 3rd down. Had we done that, we would have won 31 - 24!!!! A q.b. sack on 3rd down on any of their scoring drives and we win.....

When you cant complete the pitch and catch plays and execute, it limits the play calling. It shows that the play calling can be good now that we have turned the corner a little in the passing game.

I don't think the coaches had the level of trust in their players, Worley especially, to execute in the Oregon game to make some of the calls they made vs Georgia. Thought the play calling vs Florida was pretty good the 2nd half.... it's a process that needs time.

Think about it, if you're the coach and you see your team unable time and time again to execute plays in practice, why would you call those plays in the game? At least that's my guess.

It's all more than just Worley making throws and WRs catching balls. It's also about the OL being able to check to correct protections, make the right calls, etc. I'm guessing CBJ and CMB didn't have the trust to make those play calls earlier in the season.... now they obviously do and it's a beautiful thing to watch.

When asked about the fourth-down conversions on the Butch Jones Show, Butch said that, when the team executes those plays consistently in practice, his staff has the confidence to call them in games. He then emphasized that the team executed them effectively in practice this past week.

Gotta say the best one was the toss to Neal. I seriously thought he was gonna house that one, by the time the LB and I think it was a S saw him, it was already too late.
