Thoughts on 2023 team

I think our Defense will be elite next year. This recruiting class is loaded with defense. I'd like to add a couple WRs though I'm pretty sure Bru has another year also
I hope so, but I don't think we can truly be "elite" with this group of LBs. We can win with them but don't think we'll be dominant.

Florida will be wondering in the Wilderness like Tennessee did from 2008-2020.
I don't think so. They are gonna finish 8-4 this year and they look better each week. As much as I want them to fail, I don't think they will nearly as badly as we did for anywhere near as long.

He also had a covid year, the exemption also applied to Junior colleges. I think Byron young could even technically come back but probably won't.
ESPN has Byron Young listed as the 10th best DE for the 2023 draft. He currently has an overall ranking of 62. Coming back might bump him to a first round pick instead of a late second or third rounder. Kayvon Thibodeaux was the third DE taken in the 2022 draft. 4 year $31.4 m guaranteed contract. Drake Jackson (DE) went #61 in round 2. 4 year $5.9 m, $2.4 m guaranteed contract. That looks like 29 million reasons for Byron to stay.

Young likely is what he is due to being 24 years old. If he can get drafted he should absolutely go get paid. IMO

Wishful thinking on your part, but I hope you are right

It appears UT will be very good again next year. We have a solid group coming back and with the improvements of Milton I expect a similar year like this year. Here is the list I could come up with returning. I know I have a-lot of juniors on this list. I don’t expect any of them to go Pro. What are the thoughts on Thomas or Baron possibly going pro?

Returning Players:
OLine- Cooper Mayes, Gerald Mincey, Javontez Spraggins, Jackson Lampley, Nicholas Addison, Dayne Davis,

DLine- Omari Thomas, Tyler Baron, Bryson Eason, Joshua Josephs, James Pierce Jr., DJ Terry

Line Backers- Juwan Mitchell, Kwauze Garland, Kaleb Perry, and Elijah Herring

DB’s- Dee Williams, Kamal Hadden, Christian Charles, Deneiko Slaughter, Brandon Turnage, Andre Turrantine, Tameron McDonald, Warren Burrell

RB- Small, Wright, Sampson, Len'Neth Whitehead

WR- Ramel Keyton, Bru McCoy, Squirrel White, Jimmy Calloway, Jimmy Holiday, Walker Merrill.

QB- Milton, Jackson
If Thomas comes back that will be huge. Neither Beasley or Harrison went through senior night, they both have a covid year looks like they will be back also.

I say 9-3 floor, 12-0 ceiling. Florida, Alabama, and Georgia are the 3 swing games. I think Tennessee is more likely than not to beat Florida, though, especially if they're breaking in a new QB, which they probably will be.

2023 Vols offense depends primarily on QB play . J. Milton appears to be the heir apparent , we all know he has the physical ability . Does he have the mental toughness to lead the Vols on and off the field , through a grueling SEC schedule ?

In this class we bring in 2 top 10 edge rushers and 2 ILBs who both had over 100 tackles last year in Georgia. One of which had 170 tackles which broke the state record by something like 50 tackles

QB - Milton and how he performs and the decisions he makes is critical for us offensively. Watching his performance this year in mop up duty is extremely encouraging. No doubt he is a big play waiting to happen, but when competition level picks up, how he handles that stress will determine how far we go. A talented group of QBs.
RB - even deeper and more talented next year
WR - even if Hyatt leaves we will have talent at this position. We are now a destination for any WR in high school or via transfer portal. Bru will be #1 option.
TE - very young group. We need a transfer.
OL - have experience but depth is very questionable particularly at tackle. We need more talent, which may take years to develop. Could use a legit starting left tackle from transfer portal. Crawford could move to RT. Decent but not great.
DL - Thomas is a very good DT, strong anchor. We have a ton of bodies and depth particularly at tackle but outside Thomas no stars. Our depth and willingness to use it helps. Have some young talent at DE but could really use a stud who is a threat all opposing teams have to plan for from transfer portal.
LB - Beasley can return if he wants. He and Mitchell are average at best. Have some young ones with talent but yet another area of need from transfer portal.
DB - we are slow at safety and don’t tackle well. Lack playmakers. Have alot of depth with experience but I don’t trust any of them in man to man coverage at CB, safety or Star positions. A better pass rush would help this group but we still need a lot more talent.

Overall, I think our defense will improve and our offense may lean more on rushing attack which will complement Milton’s home run threat. I’m convinced we can play with anyone but years of recruiting success for Georgia and Alabama (among others) matters. It will be interesting how Heupel continues to tweak the offense. If we can be more physical offensively, yet still have explosive ability with Milton’s arm, it can protect a defense that is going to continue being questionable in pass defense. We need a better pass rush and better athletes overall on defense. Experience is rock solid.
