Thoughts on Aaron Medley tonight...

in previous interviews, Medley said he uses several words for focus....such as "hips" to get his hips through the kick; looks like on the first FG attempt he kicked at it, instead of swinging his hips through it. Don't think I've ever seen more of a miss, but he'll be fine; got too good of a leg and too good of a mentor; Wilhoit will get him fixed

Looked better than Palardy in his first performance. IMO, that's an improvement.

I think that he hit the first field goal attempt fat. It looked like he may have kicked the ground behind the ball, which would explain the weird direction and lack of distance. Chalk it up to nerves.

I would have shiat myself if I was in that position. National TV, 102k + LIVE (in your face audience).

I would have done worse on the second FG attempt. I like him. Good job Medley!

I call BS on the claim of him hitting the brick wall on kick offs. Showed nothing close to that type of leg strength last night as his deepest kicks were in the front of the end zone.

Not bad kick offs, just not awesome ones we were lead to expect.

To respectfully disagree; If USU was a threat on returns I'm sure they wouldn't let them return it..... Considering the fumble early on, I say give them (USU) a chance to fumble twice. :hi:

This kid definitely has the ability to be great. Watched him at the UT special teams camp last summer (June 2013) kicking field goals in to the walkway that goes around the stadium when everyone else at the camp was hitting the first few rows/parents section. Most kids his age in college are moving in to the dorms for the first time this week. If Worley can look that good compared to last year, Medley will be just fine.

I realize those "projected" field goal lines on TV are just speculation, but the line for TN seemed extremely short for a FG kicker. According to the TV projected field goal range, Medley needed us to get it to the 23 yard line in order to be in range. Why so short if he has the big leg?

I believe Medley said on the post-game radio show that he got a bunch of grass with that kick. So yeah, sounds like his foot hit the ground.

I think Medley will be awesome. First kick in front of 100,000 was sheer terror, but he'll be fine once he calms down.

That's a 40 yard field goal. 23 yards + 10 yard endzone + 3 yards you have to drop back...give or take a yard or two. That's a deep FG.

I guess we have different opinions. I realize that is a 40 yard field goal, but I do not consider that deep. Even USU's line was at the 30. (47 yard FG). 40 yard FG should be in range for any competitive D1 school IMO. Once you get past 45, I can begin to see where you're not in range. But, if a kid has a "big leg," I would expect the range to be further and potentially much further than a 40 yard FG.

Is it because of accuracy or is it because he just hasn't proven anything at the collegiate level?

Maybe they suspected that he would lay the sod over the first one. Seriously, I would guess that it was because he was unproven.

I believe the idea is to kick the ball to the 1 yard line. Always kicking it into the end zone could easily cause the opposing team to kneel and take it automatically at the 20 yard line. The decision also depends on the caliber of special teams on either sides.

Anyone who has ever stood on the first tee box in front of a bunch of people will find it easy to forgive that kick.

I've seen Medley kick 50-yard FGs and kickoffs thru the endzone for 3 years now with my own eyes. He'll be fine.

I hope I get to see the same from him sometime this season and for the record I thought he did fine last night. I did not see a kickoff anything remotely close to going through the end zone though. Maybe as mentioned before that was by design to force a return? Hope to see one of those 50 yard fg soon also!
