Thoughts on Kentucky

I'm not sure what to think about this game still. If we were that bad defending the dribble drive vs Auburn, we may really be in trouble Saturday vs Kentucky. That, plus our recent string of turnover issues, it could be a rout. We don't usually play very well in Rupp, and we know we won't be done any favors by the refs. I'm not sure how well Kentucky as a team shoots the 3, too lazy to really dig into the stats, but I think this and turnovers may be the key to a victory. Randall is going to get his points, and Cauley-Stein will affect shots near the rim, as length has bothered Maymon and Stokes all year. I do know Kentucky doesn't shoot it well from the free throw line as a team, though. This game may very well be won by experience, and fundamental basketball. If we can shoot outside well enough, hit free throws and front ends of one and ones, and don't turn it over like we have, the more I think about all this, the more I tend to think we can win. That being said, we better not come out flat, or play with little to no fire, Kentucky will want payback for the ass kicking we gave them last year, even though only a few of those guys are still there. Thoughts, predictions? I'm going to say Vols 77 Kentucky 73

My prediction is a bunch of this....

Vols 79
Cats 73

My thoughts on Kentucky? Well first off, they were overrated from the beggining. They had no business being preseason #1. Second, it's extremely difficult to get a win in Rupp. The only way we have a chance is if we stay on the ref's good side which that never happens anyway. It'll all depends on which Tennessee team will show up.

If the good team shows up: UT - 80 UK - 72
If the bad team shows up: UK - 84 - UT - 73

Since the days when Bernard King was dominating the Mildcats, I haven't thought of KY or Rump Arena very much. But they do make a useful jelly.

Historically UT has not faired well in Rupp. Not sure anything changes that tune yet. Be assured Cal will be looking to run the score up after the whipping they took last season in TBA. Our toughness will be tested.

Good thing we have a tougher breed. :)

Is Kentucky still at over 100 FTA more than the next closest team?

A lot of that is how we play. Look at who takes the freethrows. Randle, the Harrisons, and Young. All those players love to slash and attack. They're all big strong players (for their positions) and are going to probably draw fouls from smaller defenders.

UK has never been a team that spreads the floor and lets it fly. We've always been a team that gets inside and draw fouls.

In before paid-off refs and coRUPPt Arena.

They have a point.

I'm not sure how well Kentucky as a team shoots the 3, too lazy to really dig into the stats, but I think this and turnovers may be the key to a victory.

UK shoots really bad from three, don't worry. Young is streaky and the Harrisons are scared to take them sometimes. Other than that no one really shoots consistently.

Caulie Stein is gonna be our biggest problem. . We either get him in foul trouble early or hit our outside shots if we wanna contend.

Vols 71
Uk 66

I don't really agree. WCS won't do anything offensively. Randle will be your biggest problem if UK can shoot decent. It'll force defenders to be a little hesitant to leave someone open.

That all being said:

UK 72

UT 63

With Bruce still at the helm, I'd feel confident going into this game.
But Cuonzo at Rump Arena does not instill confidence.
I'm expecting a hell of a beat-down.

UK is 6th in FTA.
We are 123rd

RK TEAM GP PPG FTM FTA FTM FTA FT%

6 Kentucky 16 80.8 22.3 33.8 356 540 .659

123 Tennessee 16 74.9 17.9 25.6 287 409 .702

because UK has an attacking, driving offense and UT has a passive stand around the perimeter offense. With the new rules, its completely understandable that UK has so many FTs. Add in that no on in college basketball can handle Randall and there you go.

UT has to contain James Young to win and get WCS away from the basket on D or he will 800 blocks.

If Richardson is allowed by McRae to shoot we will win.

This is funny to me. If Richardson chooses to be agressive he will get his points. McRae passed most of the first half against Auburn. Scored the second half.

I just don't see how Maymon and Stokes keeps out of foul trouble with Randle busting through the paint. He is what I thought Stokes would be by now. I think both sit a bunch of minutes the first half.

We ran high low a lot against them last time. I could see us doing that again. Stein won't sit in the paint I don't think. We'll be something to see.

3 big keys to tomorrow's game........

1. Limit turnovers and stay even with Kentucky on the glass.

2. Don't let Kentucky get on a 10 to 15 point run during the game.

3. Limit the 3 point shot attempts and pound the ball inside to Maymon and Stokes to try and get Randall and Cauley-Stein in foul trouble.

The bench has to give us a boost with Reese and Edwards and Moore. CCM might stretch the bench and play Pops some to counteract against Kentucky's size.

Randle was not with them last time. I've seen him several times this year. He's a beast in the paint. He's averaging almost 9 FT a game. From what I've seen is either you foul him or move out of the way. He will get all the calls at Rupp. I'm guessing 12-15 FT attempts from him this game. Stokes and Maymon will be in foul trouble just as every bigs that Randle has went up against this year, imo.
