The UConn game comes at a good time for Tennessee, as the following 2 weeks will determine the success of the season. Split with Missouri and Georgia and we're looking at a 9-3 season with a chance to win a 10th in a bowl game. I would call that a successful year that continues the progress of the program. If we manage to win both of those, then you suddenly have something bigger...a chance at the East and a chance to match last year's 11-win total. Some thoughts:

-I don't know if I'd start Campbell and Mincey against UConn. I might roll with Crawford and Davis at OT to let the two big dogs heal. Both are nicked up. And I don't think I'd play Karic either. Hopefully, all the backups are in by the 2nd half.

-Along those lines, I want to see Seldon, Nico, Ethan Davis, and other freshmen play a lot after halftime. But I'd also like to see what Unarov, Johnson III, Grant, Lang, and others can do on the Oline. None of those guys are in danger of burning a redshirt, so let's see what they can do. Especially Lang...replacing Mays is my biggest concern next year. And I wanna see those freshman DBs on defense.

-Our pass defense looked like it regressed some. It's concerning that Kentucky played us so much closer than they played Missouri (or Georgia, obviously). BUT, we also need to acknowledge that that wasn't the same offense or Devin Leary that those teams faced. I know. I watched. Leary couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat in those games. He was horribly inaccurate. The announcers were right...the bye week came at a good time for Kentucky and they made some adjustments to the offense to fit his strengths and keep UT's pass rush at bay. Being allowed to hold with impunity helped. But he looked like a totally different QB from the outset of that game.

-Heupel has earned a reputation as a QB whisperer and deservedly so. But Milton has been his greatest challenge. It's taken awhile, but I think the two are finally figuring things out. Heupel is finally calling games and game planning to JM's strengths. Early in the year, it was considered a weakness of Milton's to throw on the run. But he's looking good throwing on the run now. Using Milton's legs has really helped his game advance. Taking off and running and getting hit seems to get him locked in. It also helps that WRs are catching the ball now.

-Speaking of WRs, while I wanna see freshmen playing other positions in the 2nd half Saturday, I hope it's all Nimrod, Webb, and Thornton at WR. Those guys need as much PT as they can get to advance as players as quickly as possible. Nimrod looks like a really good Slot WR for the future (and he's decent now). Thornton belongs on the outside.

-Campbell has been money at Kicker. We had so many years with mediocre kicking, that shouldn't be taken for granted. Every kick mattered against Kentucky and he hit all 4 FGs and all 3 PATs.

-It's enjoyable to watch teams get better as a season goes on. That's a staple of this staff since they arrived. This team has taken longer than the 2022 version to improve and probably has a lower ceiling, but it is improving. That's encouraging. And with college football going to a 12-team playoff, that's a great sign for future success, as championships will be determined more by how you play late than early.

-Looking at next year, so much of next year's success will be determined by a) how much the young Olinemen develop, and b) how much success Tennessee has in the portal getting Olinemen. Saturday may be the first chance we get to see which of those young guys have a chance to fulfill part a. I'm lookng forward to it.

I think this program is currently feeling the huge gap left in the roster by the Pruitt scandal and a gutting of a recruiting class leaving us with a major lack of experience between our seniors and FR. While recovery will be aided by having the portal, it's still going to make life hard for us this year and next year. We'll be better in some areas in terms of talent, but experience will be a problem in a few spots. We have to kill it in the portal this year or next season might fall short of what we're seeing this year. At this point in time, I can see another 7 win season and if we get injuries in the wrong spots again, it's not a stretch to see a 6 win season.

I would not hang my head at 8-4, but I think we beat Missouri and loose to UGA for 9-3. In my opinion, Missouri's schedule has makes them look better than they are.
Missouri’s offense looks like a nightmare matchup for us. Their Dline is strong as well. That’s not going to be a cake walk for sure.

They haven’t beaten anyone with a bunch of blue chippers on their roster yet. I give them credit for beating all the teams with similar talent level as them. But once they played LSU, it was pretty obvious they were outclassed. Now they have to play UGA, Tennessee and Florida all in a row.

It is clear that the defense was geared to stop their running back and they did a good job of doing that. However, that resulted in play a lot of zone defense agains the passing game. The zone did not wok very well and I think was because our zone defenders with too long to react the passes being throw in their zone. Giving a 5 yard cushion when playing man is like giving the offense an uncontested first down. Thank goodness our offense played well enough to out score them. However, the margin of victory should have been 16 points greater because of ou inability to score TDs in the red zone.

Prior to the beginning of the year, if the football gods would have offered me 8-4 with Milton at the helm, I'd have probably reluctantly taken it. Hoping for 9-3, but considering what we lost from last year 8-4 is a solid season and something to build on, especially if we can get a bowl win too.

Im thinking we’re 17-4 in our last 21 and that we’re going into November with only 2 losses or better for only the second time (last season) since Fulmer was here. Heupel is building up excellence equity that will start giving us the benefit of the doubt and continues our ascension to the upper tier of college football. If we can get to double digit wins again this season there will be no denying of what is happening here and that Heupel can adapt his style of coaching to get the most of whoever is on his roster. We’ve been playing our best football the last 3 seasons October and beyond. I think this will serve us greatly as we move into the expanded College Football Playoff era. We are always in the discussion from here on out.

Agree. The schedule next year is tough as usual and we will have a really young team not to mention the question marks along the offensive line. Sure seems like the staff will want to raid the transfer portal even more than they have to date. They've done a really good job with the the team this year though, coaching to the strengths of the players. It's refreshing to finally have a competent head coach.

UConn’s record is bad, but they are a decent team. They don’t give up many yards and their offense is serviceable. I don’t think it’s a team where we can roll out second and third team lineman and just roll over them. We need to play our guys if healthy, get up big and hopefully get guys experience in the 3rd/4th quarter

I think the UConn game is a perfect game to try, just as an experiment, having the DBs look back for the football. The one time it happened late in the Kentucky game (although possibly by mistake) our DB knocked the ball out of the air and didn't get a PI call.
I think it's a technique that just might work and could revolutionize success of defensive backfields.
