Thoughts on the program after the Kentucky game

I would like to see Dee Williams on offense. Put him in the slot and do an end around - WR screen, or any other multiple options to get the ball in his hands. He's such a dynamic player and with Bru going down - we need some more depth there anyway. Honestly very surprised this hasn't already happened. Maybe he's struggling grasping the offense? Who knows - I'm sure there is a good reason, I just can't figure out why we haven't seen him on offense yet. He's obviously listed as a DB - but seems like he could be a difference maker on offense.

There is a problem with getting in a lot of different players in on offense, we don't substitute. You can either run fast or substitute, not both.

Are you new to sports message boards? This is a Vols board and he is saying what he wants to happen. He's not going to drive to Knoxville and demand Heupel plays the players he wants.
Genius post of the day

I would not hang my head at 8-4, but I think we beat Missouri and loose to UGA for 9-3. In my opinion, Missouri's schedule has makes them look better than they are.

11-2 last season followed by 8-4…while we continue to solidify the roster is great progress IMO. This staff has shown that it can coach. Just need to keep adding talent.

If Nico is anywhere close to as-advertised, we should start seeing lift off next season (while still losing some games), and then it could really soar after that. Kind of like the Peyton trajectory for the program.

In terms of results on the season, we are almost right where I thought we'd be. I thought we'd beat Florida but expected Alabama to get their revenge. I don't feel as good about my preseason prediction of us beating Georgia but also not willing to rule it out as a possibility. I'd be disappointed with 8-4. Still think we can go 10-2...

Recruiting is good. Need to hold on to Matthews, as we are getting close to desperate for a spark at WR. OL depth is a concern. Closing on Seaton would help tremendously. Only other thing I'm somewhat concerned about is QB... I thought Nico would be ready by now. Can't help but wonder why he isn't. But even if there is an issue there, I'm sure Heupel will get it sorted out by next fall. His history with QBs demands respect.

We seem primed to be a perennial playoff team.

Vols fortunes aside, it would be a good thing for Mizzou to defeat Florida. Can I get an amen?

Prior to the beginning of the year, if the football gods would have offered me 8-4 with Milton at the helm, I'd have probably reluctantly taken it. Hoping for 9-3, but considering what we lost from last year 8-4 is a solid season and something to build on, especially if we can get a bowl win too.

Yep. I felt like with our OLine and bad secondary - not to mention Bazooka Joe and no NFL receivers -that it might even be worse than 8-4-
But I’m an optimist, and knowing that’s now the floor is a very good season to me- because I think we win out and maybe back into the SECCG —-especially knowing we could be 8-0 right now - and should be 7-1. Of course, I still feel like we got a lot of breaks in the aTm game that could have gone the wrong way too. So in short, considering from where we came a few short years ago….Vols fans should be very happy with the state of the program right now

I really want at least 9-3. That would be a very good record considering what was lost from last year’s roster and the injuries this year. If we beat Georgia, change “very good” to “great”.
Although I would love an upset, just think we have too much going against us; the refs first & foremost, & UGA's roster-laden 4/5 stars depth. Yes, it's possible but the penalties have to be reduced, the refs give us a fair game, and us with a balanced attack. Can't have ints against Ga. Optimistic, but with concerns.

Agree. Wouldn't be he's been being saved for the UGA game could it? Once he get's slightly in the open he's gone.

Wouldn’t it better to let the coaches decide who plays?
No one said otherwise, but by all means, argue with your straw man. I'll decode my message for you, though, since plain language is apparently cryptic to you...I was stating what I'm hoping to see Saturday. You know, for the sake of discussion. In sticking with the theme of hope, I'm still holding out hope that you can bring something of value to this message board, in spite of the evidence you keep providing to the contrary.

I think if we get to 8-4 it is still a great year. If any of the 3 previous coaches were still here, we would likely have more loses easily. Still think we can beat Missouri though and with Georgia at home, we at least have a shot.

Georgia is the better football team as of now. But who knows anything can happen in Neyland.

Im just happy for UT football to be back and the days of trying to find a 6th win so we could go to a bowl game are behind us. Also, it is nice to have a coach that is smarter than a 5th grader leading the way! Just hope we continue to have success and keep the stadium full for years to come.

This is a GOOD team and they’re playing good football. This isn’t a GREAT team but we’re still a couple years away from being able to realistically expect that on an ongoing basis. With a few breaks and playing the full four quarters of every game with intensity… I believe this team can win out.
GBO..!!

The UConn game comes at a good time for Tennessee, as the following 2 weeks will determine the success of the season. Split with Missouri and Georgia and we're looking at a 9-3 season with a chance to win a 10th in a bowl game. I would call that a successful year that continues the progress of the program. If we manage to win both of those, then you suddenly have something bigger...a chance at the East and a chance to match last year's 11-win total. Some thoughts:

-I don't know if I'd start Campbell and Mincey against UConn. I might roll with Crawford and Davis at OT to let the two big dogs heal. Both are nicked up. And I don't think I'd play Karic either. Hopefully, all the backups are in by the 2nd half.

-Along those lines, I want to see Seldon, Nico, Ethan Davis, and other freshmen play a lot after halftime. But I'd also like to see what Unarov, Johnson III, Grant, Lang, and others can do on the Oline. None of those guys are in danger of burning a redshirt, so let's see what they can do. Especially Lang...replacing Mays is my biggest concern next year. And I wanna see those freshman DBs on defense.

-Our pass defense looked like it regressed some. It's concerning that Kentucky played us so much closer than they played Missouri (or Georgia, obviously). BUT, we also need to acknowledge that that wasn't the same offense or Devin Leary that those teams faced. I know. I watched. Leary couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat in those games. He was horribly inaccurate. The announcers were right...the bye week came at a good time for Kentucky and they made some adjustments to the offense to fit his strengths and keep UT's pass rush at bay. Being allowed to hold with impunity helped. But he looked like a totally different QB from the outset of that game.

-Heupel has earned a reputation as a QB whisperer and deservedly so. But Milton has been his greatest challenge. It's taken awhile, but I think the two are finally figuring things out. Heupel is finally calling games and game planning to JM's strengths. Early in the year, it was considered a weakness of Milton's to throw on the run. But he's looking good throwing on the run now. Using Milton's legs has really helped his game advance. Taking off and running and getting hit seems to get him locked in. It also helps that WRs are catching the ball now.

-Speaking of WRs, while I wanna see freshmen playing other positions in the 2nd half Saturday, I hope it's all Nimrod, Webb, and Thornton at WR. Those guys need as much PT as they can get to advance as players as quickly as possible. Nimrod looks like a really good Slot WR for the future (and he's decent now). Thornton belongs on the outside.

-Campbell has been money at Kicker. We had so many years with mediocre kicking, that shouldn't be taken for granted. Every kick mattered against Kentucky and he hit all 4 FGs and all 3 PATs.

-It's enjoyable to watch teams get better as a season goes on. That's a staple of this staff since they arrived. This team has taken longer than the 2022 version to improve and probably has a lower ceiling, but it is improving. That's encouraging. And with college football going to a 12-team playoff, that's a great sign for future success, as championships will be determined more by how you play late than early.

-Looking at next year, so much of next year's success will be determined by a) how much the young Olinemen develop, and b) how much success Tennessee has in the portal getting Olinemen. Saturday may be the first chance we get to see which of those young guys have a chance to fulfill part a. I'm lookng forward to it.
You left out what if we lose to Missouri and Georgia.
