Thoughts on the UCLA-Temple Game

Yes. The amazing thing is that his comment about their defensive coordinator, Norm Chow, was still the most informed part of the post.

Dude, with Chow's vast expertise, don't think for a minute that he didn't have major influence on the decision to stack the middle with the game on the line. I have a friend who lives in L.A. and says Chow has god-like status with the entire U.C.L.A. staff; top to bottom. They consult him on EVERYTHING.

Opinions, opinions. Isn't it great that we can express them on this forum? I didn't mean that Crompton play-faking was the only call. I'm merely saying that Hardesty up the middle was what Chow was expecting and those two defensive tackles had been stuffing us all day. Hell, Montario on a power-sweep would have carried the day. Oh well, just my opinion. No more; no less. Better days ahead, my friends. GO VOLS!!!:pepper:

That would be twice in one thread where you've pointed to Chow's defensive calls. I guess Monte just saw something and called the running play. :lolabove:

Nice try to act like you know what your talking about.. Monte is the best d coor in the business. Maybe we should ask him what offensive plays to run...

Indeed we are. Some people don't read the thread and repeat the same crap over again. Looks like UCLA is going to pull this one out, BTW. UCLA still looks terrible though. Would have liked to see Temple pull this one out, regardless of how it makes us look.

IMHO, poor coaching and horrible play-calling. That one is squarely on Kiff's shoulders. Granted , he was still in the learning-curve of the team personnel, but the 4th down call on the 1 1/2 yard line with the game on the line is one I'll bet CLK wishes he had back. U.C.L.A. had 9 nine men in the box and Monterio had NO chance. Norm Chow went all in (literally) and we bit. Crompton could have play-faked and WALKED into the end-zone, like Peyton did against Alabama. Not just that play. Kiff was way too conservative all day. Had we played them in Oct./Nov., Vols win big. Don't get me wrong. I love CLK and staff and what they're doing; where they're taking the Vol program. I'm just saying I bet when Kiff & Co. reviewed the game film, it was a quantum leap in learning "on the job". GO VOLS and BEAT V.T.!!!
That was the early-in-CLK's-first-year Crompton that was playing. Not sure he could have walked into the endzone at that point in the season.

Coach Bullough was right to stack the box. Everyone watching the game (except maybe you) knew that Crompton was useless on that day.

UT would win about 31-14 if they played 2day. JC was why we lost the first game and a new scheme was being learned.

If you can't get one lousy yard at home against a Pac 10 team, then you shouldn't have bothered to walk over to the stadium.

Kiffin needed to know what he could get from his OL when it's gut-check time. Better to find out early in the year in a nonconference game than later on. He asked them for a yard, and they couldn't do it. Obviously you'd like to do things differently if you had it to do over again, but I have no problem with the way Kiffin played it at the time.

I think Kiffin has said he wished he'd called that one differently. Even a run outside would have been and improvement the way Brian Price was controlling the middle of the line. Despite the Norm Chow confusion, I think he's right that the bootleg would probably scored, and you didn't even have to trust Crompton's arm to do it. Whatever, I'm not losing any sleep over it, if you're going to blow a winnable game, this was the year to do it.

Thanks Dudley. So I got the coordinater wrong. Big deal. The question was "How did we lose to those guys?" Even with the poor play of Crompton and several others, we STILL had a chance to win and blew it. IMHO, with the box stacked, any quick sweep to the pylon would have worked. Prince and that other defensive tackle had stuffed us all day between tackles.

So "useless" that Kiffin stuck with him the rest of the season, right?

Wow, 423. Over-bearing arrogance is such a noble trait in a person. Oops, I forgot. You've never made a mistake before. Jeez, you'd fit right in with Niles Crane and his Wine Club.
