Dan Harralson posted this: After playing Heupel's coaching tree earlier this season, Saban discussed the offense with better personnel. "They’re sort of challenging with some of the things that they do - we’re going to play teams that are much more physical, aggressive and talented than what they are.”

I take this as fighting words especially the last part. Thoughts?

I’m going to assume that’s taken out of context to at least some degree.

Speaking of bulletin board material, here's a snippet of what Saban said after the UT game last season: “I told the players they have a bye week coming up. We have a real team we have to play in two weeks. We need to get some rest. We need to recover, but we also need to focus on what we need to do to finish the season and get some of these things corrected."

That "real team" they had to play was LSU...Let's show him what a "real team" looks like Saturday!

So much here I don't understand:

1. Heupel has a coaching tree? He has only been a head coach 4.5 years, I am not aware of a single assistant coach who has worked for him going on to be a head coach in turn. So who the heck is Dan Harralson talking about? Who was Bama playing?

2. What does Harralson mean, "Saban discussed the offense with better personnel"? Is he trying to say that Bama has better personnel than this unnamed team they played? Or that the unnamed team has better personnel than the Vols? Or that the Vols have better personnel than this unnamed team? So confusing. You would think a reporter would be able to use the English language more effectively than this.

3. Now we've finally gotten to Saban's actual words. But who is "they"? Who is he talking about? Who does he mean when he insinuates they aren't the most physical, aggressive, or talented team the Tide will face? Is he talking about the Vols? Or this other unnamed team that apparently has a coach from Josh Heupel's coaching tree?

Finally, how can we react to this when it is SO UTTERLY unclear what Harralson is trying to get at?

*confused*

I think we are playing with good old house money. I think Saban knows it and he is in a paralysis of analysis mode at the moment. Not the typical pre week Saban Tennessee talk we have heard in the past. The BY comments or no comments and the Cheetah Defense are head games. Saban is talking too much which makes me think he knows he is in a run for money on Saturday. He is the Penny Hardaway of College Football to a degree.

He's talking to his team. He is lighting a fire to not be lax in preparation. He wants them to approach this game against us with an intensity setting set on UGA or tOSU,

Doesn't offend me at all.
but then wouldn’t he say we are very aggressive, physical and talented to get them thinking they need to have their best?

The last time we beat them, the youngest member of their team was 2 years old. I think it would be easier to "prep" them for the "big boys" they will play later in the season than to convince them this isn't the "same ole UT".

It's all coach-speak anyway. None of it mattes. Why be riled up by something meaningless?

Thanks.

Do you understand any of the rest of that?

Why does Harralson think of Utah State's head coach as "part of Heupel's coaching tree"? What "better personnel" was Saban discussing? Who is Saban's "they" in the quote?

And a new question: why would what Saban said about a Group of 5 team (Utah State) translate in any way to Tennessee football?

Understand any of that?

p.s. I didn't know anything about Utah State's head coach, Blake Anderson, so I looked him up. As far as I can tell, he and Josh Heupel have never worked together. Yes, Josh was at Utah State one year (just one year), in 2015. But Anderson wasn't there that year, he was at Arkansas State, 2014 to 2020. So what in the wide world of sports is Dan Harralson talking about, can you figure it out?

If the OL can protect I suspect Bru and company will make them pay early.

I read an article where they talked about Utah State running the same offense as CJH but with a lot less talent. I don't remember how they connected the 2 coaching wise.

Ah okay, thanks.

So either Dan Harralson is taking all of this WAAAAY out of context (and being super confusing in the process), or Saban was trying to draw conclusions about prepping for Tennessee based on how things went against Utah State.

I'm going to guess the former is true, and not the latter. Saban is no idiot. Harralson...well, he might be, it turns out.

Go Vols!

Maybe he was being sarcastic by referring to a coaching tree when there isn’t one. Regardless, he’s about to line up against the best offense in the country so he can see how well his defense stacks up. And his offense will be run by a banged up quarterback, or a turnover machine, neither of whom will be able to hear themselves think. I don’t think they can keep up.
