-Hard not to be excited about the pitching this team has. I know we weren't playing an SEC team, but Georgia Southern is a program that upset some big time teams last year (East Carolina, Georgia, Oklahoma) and will be right in the thick of a Regional hunt. Tennessee swept them last year, but those wins were by 2, 2, and in extra innings. This year, Tennessee just annihilated them in all three games.

-Burns and Dollander were phenomenal. The bullpen didn't allow a run (Sewell looks even better than last year and will be an extremely valuable stretch/emergency starter/long relief man). Add Tidwell and Halvorsen to the mix for SEC play and this could be the best staff in the SEC by conference play/postseason.

-Speaking of pitching, Drew Beam looks like a future star. I know he only went 3 inning and had some control trouble, but part of that was a strange strike zone. I didn't know anything about this kid until a couple of weeks ago. He is a big kid with good stuff. Anderson should be able to mold him into something special.

-If I had to be critical of anything, maybe Ethan Smith's debut was a little concerning, given that he had to be bailed out of some jams by great defense. But in his defense, it was a bunt single that ignited all that. I'm sure he'll be fine.

-I like the lineup used on Sunday as the primary lineup for Tennessee, ASSUMING Chambers is the bat he's supposed to be (he didn't really show it this weekend, but it's just one series). Stephenson in LF makes a ton of sense, given that a) he speed serves UT well in the outfield; b) he's considered an average arm at SS; c) Chambers seems like a defensive liability; and d) Stephenson HAS to be in the lineup. He's just too dynamic with his speed. And he showed that he has some pop in the bat too.

So I'd go with the Russell/Taylor platoon at Catcher, Lipcius at 1B, Ortega at 2B, Lawson at SS, Lipscomb at 3B, Stephenson in LF, Gilbert in CF, Beck in RF, and Lawson at DH. I think that gives UT the best defensive lineup without sacrificing hitting. That DH spot might rotate some between Lawson, Burke, Moore, and Booker (or Stephenson with Booker in LF). So many options with this lineup.

-I love seeing all the folks jump on the bandwagon. I used to come over to this board and there was nothing to discuss because no one was here. Reminds me of being a Preds fan, hoping every year for a deep playoff run, then we finally got the run to the Final in 2017. After that, no one could wait until the opening game, including a bunch of new fans who never cared much before. This weekend's crowd at Lindsey Nelson reflects something similar. And just because I was a Preds fan before they made that run, that doesn't mean I wasn't happy to have new fans on board. Same applies here. Vitello is really doing something special with this program.

This could be the best pitching staff at UT since the 1984 staff.

R. Rodriguez
S. Sercy
R. Delucia

All 10+ year big leaguers eventually...

Side Note: Strikeouts from our hitters is way down from last years group so far.

I would be cautious with assessments this early, but there is certainly reason to be optimistic, especially with offense and pitching. Both the starters and bullpen look to be terrific. The defense also looks solid, but we have newbies at 5 of the 8 positions, and that includes the 3 infield up-the-middle positions. One of the great things about last year's team was defense up the middle. It's too early to tell yet if this defense will be great or average. If it turns out to be great, this team could be great.

I know there are a lot of good teams out there, and obviously we lost some horses from last year, but it feels like this team is so underrated right now. (Fine with me — keep that chip on your shoulder.)

Burns and Dollander were ridiculous. If we can get Tidwell back at some point and roll those three out every weekend, you have to like the pitching situation.

Lipscomb and Ortega really showed up with the bats this weekend, and Stephenson is going to make a lot of things happen on the bases.

How about that perfect throw from Beck to get the out at the plate too (on Saturday?)…

Still pleased that Chase Burns decided to play for the Vols. Says a lot about the kid and his family. IIRC he hit 99 on a pitch or two. Coach Anderson knows how to bring these arms along so I look for him to be limited to 5-6 innings for a while. Baseball at UT should always be contenders (most years) so I hope CTV stays with us for a while. And the Stephenson kid can flat out fly. He'll hopefully be very active at the leadoff spot all year.

I think they were holding some things for Tennessee Tech. Mark still has not thrown either so I think you will see Mark, Redmond, and Ben plus a few others on Tuesday. Have to win the weekday games. By the scores, Wednesday and this weekend may not be big challenges if we do our thing. TT went 3-0 this weekend.

A bunch of reasons you can't keep Joyce in there throwing 100 when the score is 10-0 or whatever it was. First sportsmanship, second, save him for Tuesday or Wednesday. Third, he needed to get the butterflies out, mission accomplished. And why give other teams the opportunity to get film on him. Oh, Vitello needed to jockey kids in and out at that point.

That first pitch of Joyce? Straight 100 mph gas right down the middle. That batters still thinkin' about it on this Monday afternoon.

As far as our hitting? Against that green pitching crew on Ga. Southern, we better hit like that. I think the pitching stole the show this weekend.

A couple thoughts from the weekend…

Last year’s 50 win team, that made it to the CWS, never did it. Two shut outs in a series. In fact, I probably need to double check this, in the regular season, I think we only had one shutout. Think about that for a second.

I was pleased with Sunday’s offensive showing. At times, last year, it felt like if we can’t hit the ball over the wall…

So…overall, the new guys showed up, the veterans showed up and in game three, about everybody who played got in on the act! Impressive debut in my humble opinion.

What does that mean going forward? I dunno, but I’m dang sure ready to find out!!!

GBO!!!

If Tidwell and Halvorsen come back healthy, this team will be a problem for everyone. We would have 3 potential 1st round arms for weekend series, guys like Beam and McClaughlin for mid-week/spot start, then Halvorsen, Joyce, Connell, Walsh, Smith, Sewell, etc in relief. As good as we were last year, I think we are deeper this year.

I knew all those guys pitched at UT, but didn’t realize they were all on the same staff. Wow.

It’s hard to take too much away from the small sample size, but it’s hard to come away much happier than following complete dominance from the Vols all weekend.

I’m not sure if this team is “better” than the OmaVols last year, but I do think it’s already fair to say we are much deeper. This is the flashes of depth Vitello is hoping to build to make this program have staying power like Arkansas and Vandy.

I think there is more natural talent on this roster than last year, too. But, never discount the value of experience and leadership in college sports, which last year’s team had a bunch of. Lots of new faces. Lots of question marks about how we’ll respond against better competition, but returning Walsh and Russell with Beck and Gilbert will hopefully provide just the spark of leadership and culture needed to accelerate past last year.

Oh, and as many have said, if we do get Blade back by SEC play, I struggle to think of a rotation in the country that you could say is definitively better than ours. Offense is great, but pitching wins championships. Just look at the teams that win in the majors.

Agree with a lot of your points. We appear to be deep, have big bats throughout the lineup, some nice arms, and swagger. My only concern is replacing the defense that Fergy and Spence gave us up the middle and I also think runners will test Russell, behind the plate.
Other than that, I think we are solid!
GBO!!

I'd like to see a few more pitches from Joyce this coming week.

Two was just a tease.
The scouts sure paid attention at 100 mph. Some of them changed rows to get closer to the backstop.

I’m not CFA, but I’d think opposing batters would get timing thrown off going from facing a guy who doesn’t touch 100 mph, to Joyce, and possibly back to another guy who doesn’t touch 100 mph.
