The WH party crashers last week brought this issue up again and I saw reference to the original story, which is a month or so old.

Report: Secret Service strained to protect Obama - Yahoo! News

So many of you complained about the way Bush was treated. I hope to see many of you sign on here that this is a truly alarming thing and that you vehemently oppose commentators or others who are egging on hate at this level.

I will do it as vehemently as you did. Sound fair?

well it goes both ways, if someone is threatening the life of the president, or anyone for that matter then they need to be shut up. Obama bashers the same with Bush bashers. I personally dislike Obama's politics, cant stand it, but i dont want the guy to die, in fact i probably would enjoy sitting down to have a beer with him.

BUT

it seemed OK for the bush bashers to do it in the mainstream.

Don't be absurd. He's a black man with Arab ancestry. Pundits aren't remotely the issue here.

any verification on those numbers or are we just supposed to take the writer's word?

The report says the Secret Service is strained by a drastic increase in threats to President Obama, coupled with deep budget cuts

The report, issued in August by the Congressional Research Service, claimed that if "an evaluation of the service's two missions" were to be done at this time, there's a good possibility that "it might be determined that it is ineffective...to conduct its protection mission and investigate financial crimes."

so it's not just threats on the Pres that are causing this

ironically they can kill two birds with one stone, protect the president while investigating his cronies

Are we trying to put more blame on the commentators that we are on the president and his policies?

When times are hard and things get bad the people are going to become restless, when the president is proposing added spending for social programs on top of the out of control spending we are already left with while many people struggle to pay bills and keep their heads above water they lash out.

That being said it is petty and stupid to make threats against the president, 99.9999999999999% are unfounded idiocy. Those that do make legit threats need to be dealt with accordingly. Trying to somehow tie this in with commentators voicing dissent is petty as well though. If commentators voicing other opinion and dislike of the president inspired others to make threats and attempts on the presidents life then I'm sure Bush would have been killed twice a day for his last 6 to 7 years in office.

I never once, publicly or secretly, hoped that someone took a potshot at Bush. Had any commentator from the left said things that in my view accused him of being a terrorist traitor who was really a terrorist plant technically not qualified to be president and who is out to get us such that people were taking guns tohis speeches and basically defying all authority as if it was 1860 Mississippi, hell yes I'd have said something.

why do they need to spend more money? are they responsible for investigating all of these things? i assume the president is no more secure than bush was.

Show one bit of evidence that directly links threats to the "commentators".

This reminds me of the census worker brewha - the "commentators and angry rhetoric were responsible for the murder". Turns out it was a suicide.

If you keep spewing these unsupported allegations, we should expect to see threats against Rush Limbaugh go up (according to your theory).

never said that but your shot at right wing commentators was quite hypocritical

Two things.

First, we don't know of any of these threats or who made them or who their influences might be. They are not made public. And so by definition, as you well know, there is no way I can possibly point to a particular would-be assassin and tell you how often he listens to Beck or Fox or Savage or whoever.

Second, and related, no one has taken such a pot shot. And so at this point in time all we can work with is the evidence we have of the effect of these commentators. I think it fair to say that Beck and Fox in particular are taking credit for a lot of the Tea Party movement which has occassionally -- not always, but occassionally -- had some fairly scary overtones to it.

There also seems to be a certain level of self-righteousness and martyrdom to it that seems to in turn possess these people with the guns or the clergyman out in Arizone hoping Obama dies of brain cancer. A sort of "We know best for the country and we are going to save you by sticking to our principles no matter what" and a real defiant mentality.

I'd be very curious as to who the Secret Service is watching as potential real threats and who they, in turn, are listening to and watching.

if I had said that the daily show and hillary clinton were somewhat responsible for death threats on bush what would have said to me?

I don't recall people on the Daily Show or Hillary Clinton sitting there, 1) with tears in their eyes and blackboards behind them explaining how Bush was part of a conspriacy to bring down the nation, 2) saying they were weeping because they are just a patriot and can't stand what they are seeing this racist President, who might not even be qualified to be President, and who might be a secret Muslim, do to the land of Washington and Lincoln, and 3) implying, if not outright saying, that if someone would take care of this the whole nation would be eternally grateful.

yeah they were completely without hubris comparing bush to hitler and all and saying he would be tried for war crimes in our lifetime.

on one episode of the Daily Show, before Jon Stewart, they showed a picture of Bush with rifle crosshairs superimposed and an "Assassins wanted" tag under the picture.

your selective outrage is pathetic.

it's no secret you don't like Beck, the problem is that you turn to people like Chris Matthews and Ed Schultz to back up your arguments.

Using the fear tactic to advocate the silencing of dissent. Pathetic and quite un-American.

The only thing missing in your fantasy explanation is the chalk board and tears in your eyes

I also think that sports commentators should be ashamed of themselves. I heard Jackie Robinson's death threats were up 1,000,000,000% compared to Mickey Mantle.

Why would anyone not like Obama?

He is taking from the hard working, and giving to the non-working.
