Sources: Denver University, Texas-San Antonio and Texas State to join WAC - ESPN

University of Denver, Texas-San Antonio and Texas State will join the WAC in 2012-13 to offset the departures of Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada to the Mountain West, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a joke?

A garbage conference wants to continue it's existence so they are allowed to drag even more garbage teams up to the FBS.

Does the NCAA have any say in preventing this? 120 teams is plenty.

Denver has a football team? Geeeeeeez.

UTSA, which still needs official approval from the board of regents, and Texas State will join in all sports. Denver will join for all sports except for football, since the Pioneers don't play at the FBS level.

Edit: Doesn't show football on their site. I don't understand the comment about not playing football at the FBS level. Did they mean FCS? Looks as though they don't play football period.

Ya, I'm a student at DU. No football team now, and no plans on getting one. Their headline sport is definitely hockey, which I don't think is even a WAC sport.

They do have a somewhat solid basketball program that is currently competing in the Sunbelt, and are highly competitive (win national titles) in all kinds of sports that no one cares about.

The WAC makes lots of sense for DU. I don't see how DU makes sense to the WAC, though.

I don't even know why they use standard conferences for D-I hockey... It seems like half of any given conference at most even has an NCAA hockey team.

They don't; there are four major conferences. The CCHA encompasses schools from the Big Ten, MAC, and GLIC (D-2). The ECAC includes the Ivy League, Patriot League, NEC, and Liberty (D-3). Hockey East has the Big East, Northeast Ten (D-2), America East, CAA, and ACC. And the WCHA has the Big Ten and a few random small western-based conferences.

Ah. Thanks for the info.

Oh, it's real. I live in San Antonio and it's all we have been hearing about for months. There are joint pressers today at 4:00 CST with the WAC, UTSA, and Texas State (not sure about Denver) to probably make it official.
UTSA doesn't even have a football team yet; they don't play their first game until next season with Larry Cocker as their coach. They'll spend one year at FCS before moving up to FBS. They wanted to spend 2-3 years in FCS before moving up, and then going as an independent, but the WAC offer was too good to pass up.

This email was in my inbox this morning. It said "confidential," but seemed to be written a fair bit earlier than today and specifically said "until Thursday," so I don't mind sharing it. Plus, they emailed it to the whole campus this morning.

Dear University of Denver Students,

As some of you may know, many of the University of DenverÂ’s varsity athletic teams will be moving from the Sun Belt Conference to the Western Athletic Conference effective July 1, 2012. The member institutions of the WAC provide a much more suitable geographic fit for our programs and will surely become great regional rivals in the years ahead. While we are appreciative of the relationships and memories established over the course of our membership in the Sun Belt Conference, we look eagerly to the future as proud members of the WAC. Thank you for helping us make this tremendous achievement a reality!

If your schedule permits, please plan to join us on Thursday, November 11 for the formal press conference in Magness Arena. The WAC will make their own expansion announcement at 3:00 p.m. The Denver press conference will immediately follow and we anticipate this will be at approximately 3:30 p.m. We are excited to celebrate at that time and would love for you to be with us! Until Thursday, please respect the very confidential nature of this subject matter.

I look forward to seeing all of you at a DU game in the near future. Go Pioneers!

Peg Bradley-Doppes
Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation

I heard from a lot of guys that were telling me that Texas State and Texas-San Antonio were falling all over themselves to get to FBS status.

So it looks like that FBS might have as many as 3 new teams by 2013-2014 - UTSA, Texas State, and South Alabama

Texas State just sounds too much like a powerhouse program kind of name. The name change was brilliant and I wouldn't be surprised if they made huge strides in coming decades.

Too bad probation ruined their NC teams:

why would schools jump ship from Div 1-aa when they have that oh-so-desired playoff so many are screaming for? why, its the only way to determine 'a true champion', right?

Yeah, because FCS Champion > FBS Mediocrity.

This decision had absolutely nothing to do with a playoff, and everything to do with the money and exposure that comes with being even a terrible FBS program.

That should have been obvious.
