tiger High, stuck with Pastner, looking at AD

That 73 Memphis Team led by Finch, Kenon and Robinson was legit. That may be one of the best Tiger teams to hit the floor. Nothing dirty about Larry Kenon during his 1 year at Memphis and his Coach Gene Bartow went on to coach at UCLA later on. I wouldn't call Keith Lee (team) dirty by no means. He played all 4 years in Memphis when he could have gone Pro early. Dana Kirk on the other hand may have allegedly done some things. And Derrick Rose test scores, well that was in Chicago so none of know who really showed up to take that test.

And after the shenanigans of Kirk, Finch took over and was nothing but class. Players started graduating and he ran a clean program. I was never a fan of Memphis State and the only time I ever rooted for Tiger basketball was when Mr. Finch was the head coach, though those Keith Lee teams were fun to watch, and as it turned out rather tragic. I certainly did not root for them after they let him go and pretty much ignored him until late in his life.

Larry Finch is one of the greatest Memphians and the first statute outside of the Forum needs to be of him.

Sylvester Gray and Marvin Alexander were busted for taking money from an agent under Finch's watch, but he had nothing to do with it. Losing 2 of the best front court players in college basketball at the time was a huge blow. Finch lost some recruiting battles to Arkansas in the 90's (Todd Day and a few others) that ultimately sealed his fate. The way he was fired was despicable and unforgivable - he was literally fired at a hot dog stand.

Wow. You would think a school with such a good academic reputation would have a research department.

If I were a GT fan I would start a BBB petition - Cremins that is.

For the record, I was embarrassed by the Knoxville version.

He still made a Sweet 16 in 1995, ironically losing to Arkansas. Arkansas made the FF that year.

I believe Finch was offered an administrative position after being forced out. He had too much pride to accept it. I know a former Memphis player who says that he wished Larry would have taken it because it was ugly the way that it ended.

Sounds like GTech exhausted all of their options. They tried Holtmann and a few others. Jeff Goodman said that GTech's AD is good; he hired Chris Mack and Thad Matta at Xavier.

Pastner can recruit, and Atlanta is a hotbed. But, I would require him to hire a good X's and O's assistant. Playing in the ACC won't be easy.

Agree, he is a proven recruiter, but he wasted a lot of talent the last couple of years. He definitely needs a very good X's and O's assistant if he can find one and is willing to let them coach.

GT--allegedly, at least--went after Capel, Cuonzo, and Pastner. They either don't care about in-game coaching ability at all or are terrible at evaluating it

Unless they force a coach to hire an assistant that is good at X's and O's, they need a head coach that is both a good in-game coach and recruiter. Their strategy isn't bad because they need someone to take advantage of the Atlanta talent. Although they play in a tough conference, that is one school with higher academic requirements that is surrounded by talent.
