Tim Banks deserves major recognition!

We have a really good defense, but we also haven't played alot of offensive juggernauts either:

Alabama, 19th
Florida, 50th
Arkansas, 61st
NC State, 82nd
Oklahoma, 107th
Kent State, 129th
Chattanooga, NR

Alabama was by far the best offense we have played, and we acquitted ourselves nicely at home. There's alot of work left to do though before Banks wins the Broyles Award. He should definitely be on the watch list at this point.
Maybe we help contribute to their lowly rankings 🤷

Those are not good offensive #'s for our opponents, but are those the rankings now or when we played them? I would imagine each would be a tad better before we played them.
They are now, but most everybody has played at least 7 games at this point so 1 game is of limited weight. I mean, our best and worst opponent are 110 spots apart, so what they did not against us (in 6 out of 7 games) clearly can make a huge impact in their ranking.

See my comment above, with everybody having played at least 7 games, 1 game alone doesn't move the needle too much. While it's true that we have played alot of very crappy offenses, like I said we acquitted ourselves well against Alabama, so that's encouraging but they don't give the Broyles Award out before Halloween for obvious reasons. Banks should 100% be on the watch list though.

Where is the rest of your list? I ask for yours because I can't find one like it. I'm not doubting it, I just can't find it.

I used scoring offense from cfbstats.

Florida moved from 50th to 49th and
Arkansas moved from 61st to 60th and
NC State moved from 82nd to 83rd

Otherwise it's still the same. It must have recalibrated after last night's games is all I can figure.

Banks finally has the jimmys and joes and is showing his x and o's are superb with the right people. I know there are people leaving after this year but he will have elite defenses continually if he gets his guys. I know that sounds like duh but you have to have the guys for your scheme to work.

It's close to the others I found. The thing I noticed from them is, take a look at alot of the top 15 and look who they've played. I mean we're 15 on that list. Take away Chattanooga and Kent St like everyone here says are basically HS teams, and how far do we drop?

I can't prove it, but I believe we'd slow down every one of the top 25 on that list and beat at least 10 if not 12 of the top 14. I didn't pay much attention to the rest, but we already beat 18. And look what happened to #17 when they played a great D in Georgia.

I guess my point without spending all day analyzing all of this is, even though you're not saying it's bad, I believe our D is better than you're giving it credit for.

Bear in mind, in recent years past we would have given up over 20 points in most of those games. Even Kent St probably would have scored a couple times.

What are the defenses the top rated offenses have played? There are so many variables.

No matter how you slice it, holding every team in 7 games to less than 17 points is exceptional (I don’t hold that last TD by Ark against the D. If it wasn’t for the remaining time on the clock we would have held them to a FG).

That's why I said we had a "really good defense" and that Banks should be on the watch list for the Broyles Award, but there's a ways to go obviously. Over the years I have tried to look at matters which are the subject of hype as rationally as I can, and at present the statistics halfway through the season do suggest that we haven't played a particularly good offense, other than Alabama (who again we acquitted ourselves well against in Neyland last Saturday).

I remember thinking he was not going to be able to do the job here. I never publicly criticized the job he was doing. However, in the back of my head I thought he may have been a bad hire. Wow, did I get that wrong. He has this defense on point and playing like a well oiled machine. Keep at it CJB!
I will admit I had similar thoughts. I recall a lot of DCs and even some assistants did not want to come here when Huepel was looking for DC so I thought Banks was going to be 'stop-gap' dude while rebuilding is going on. In 2022, defense flashed some but had horrible days as well. Last year was first time I thought Banks was actually building something when defense played well. Then obviously we are elite on defense now. Can't emphasize how well he has done.

The last four possessions by Alabama on Saturday:

* 3 plays, 4 yds, punt, 1:38
* 3 plays, -2 yds, punt, 1:13
* 4 plays, 1 yd, turnover on downs, 0:37
* 1 play, 0 yds, interception, 0:06

Total: 11 plays for 3 yds with a turnover on downs and an interception.

The Vols scored 10 points in our last four possessions. Incredible finish by the Vols!

I think our Jimmy's and Joe's are a lot better this year and we are another year into the system. Don't forget how depleted we were when CJH arrived. Didn't we lose a couple dozen players with the Pruitt debacle.
Now we can see what is capable of when he has more elite players.
