Time for Cutty to hang it up

I agree that the job isn’t desirable at all. I think Vandy is definitely more difficult though. The advantage Vandy has is $ and conference prestige, but you can win at Duke given the right circumstances. Duke won the division less than 10 years ago. They had aTm and Johnny Football on the ropes in the Peach Bowl. Vanderbilt has zero chance of ever winning the division because there are always going to be blue blood elites in the way, even when they’re bad Mizzou or South Carolina has filled that vacuum. My suggestion for Duke was to go after Will Healy or make the move to a triple option style of offense with the next coach. I was hoping Clay Helton would’ve stayed available because I think he would’ve fit the mold you were talking about .
Do you think they can emulate what Wake is doing in any way? Whatever that template is should be able to work for Duke, given that they are similar institutions.

What part of "Duke is a basketball school" is unclear? They're in the top 10 and might win it all in Coach K's last year...... but you want football to have momentum?

Duke is a basketball school. After Coach K retires, they might not even be that. Football gets zero traction at Duke...... and especially no traction this year. It's Coach K's year.

He has a bad record at Duke. You are what your record says you are.

They could hire Saban and they would still be lucky to make a bowl game every 3 years. Not saying it's not time for Cutcliffe to retire; just that Duke is not landing Jamey Chadwell. He's better off at Coastal Carolina until a major program comes knocking.

Frankly, Duke is IMO the worst P5 job. Even below Vandy and Kansas. Landing Cutcliffe was a major coup for them. They're going to have to look for another Cutcliffe type; someone who is burnt out with the politics and absurd expectations of other programs, and just wants to coach.
Patterson might be a good fit. At least for that coaching description.

I think they can be somewhat successful and have expectations to make a bowl game at least every other year. Durham is kind of weird. Duke does a lot to try and entice the community to come to the games, but it just doesn’t take. It’s going to take years of success to see the stadium consistently packed, but right now there’s as much excitement going to a Durham Bulls game as there is a Duke football game. Coach Cut has done a lot from stadium renovations, practice facilities, having the Manning’s comeback every year to work with the current players and giving the perception that Duke can compete on certain levels with other Power 5 programs, but the Gameday atmosphere is awful. Whatever reputation the Cameron Crazies may have, it’s 180 of that for football. You can’t recruit with that.

Wake has kind of had the same model since Jim Grobe was there, bring in 2-3 star guys, keep them there for 5 years, develop them and allow that process to grow. Some years you’ll be pretty good, other you might be a 4-5 win team, but you’ll always be somewhat competitive. Wake won the ACC in 2006 or something like that and they could again this season. 2 titles in 15 years is a # that any team would take in North Carolina .

I never expect Duke to win the ACC, but the division could be in reach every 7 years. If they could find the right string of coaches they can compete because the right coach will be out the door after 2, 3 or 4 years for greener pastures.

I guess I can see that. Perhaps Duke is just too much of a basketball school and Duke football would have to become really good (unlikely) for it to take.

Meanwhile Wake basketball is horrendous and hasn't even won a tournament game since 2010.

Will Healy and Jamie Chadwell would be nuts to go to Duke. Its a tough place and program is void of talent right now. If you want to commit career suicide, go there. Otherwise be patient, another job, much better will open up.

Will Healy took the APSU job (granted someone had to). Arguably the worst FCS program of all time prior to his arrival.

Wasnt that his first job? Id argue that its easier to win in the OVC at AP than in ACC at Duke....

I think it may be too much of basketball school. I don’t think it was Cut’s lack of vision or knowledge of how to build a program that held him back from winning more. At some point the atmosphere and the surrounding community have to be part of it as well. Duke even put the “Bull City” hand signal on the front of their face mask support on the front of the helmet this season to try and represent Durham. It just isn’t a football town. That’s an example of how much they’ve tried to endear themselves to the locals.

Hearing that Coach Cut will announce his retirement sometime soon. Most likely early this week.

I see Duke football kind of being in the same boat as Vandy football, except Vandy isn't a basketball school really. Vandy had their best years in forever with Franklin and still were struggling to get 30K Vandy fans to show up. I think Duke is in the same boat.
