Time for Merk

No way you can hit the portal.and get someone else ready for the season -no way Merk could/would be better prepared than Nico for the upcoming season.
Losing Nico will cost us recruits,a .500 season, and top players who see TN will not pay market value.
Nico making 2mil and Sellers and Lagway making almost 4.
Why as a top recruit, would i go to TN if they don't wanna pay?
If I'm Faison-I might be looking somewhere else. If they will not pay Nico competitively (with Lagway and Sellers,Beck), why are they going to pay me?
YOU they are not payin a damn thang.

My big question is what happened? I mean why do this now of all times? If and I mean IF this was a calculated and planned move by Nico and his people then that is messed up. This is wild. Most of us thought Nico was the one. The one to really push us into the elite category.

I remember making a thread asking what everyone’s realistic stat expectations were for Nico. And boy were most way off. I have 100% faith in Merk and GMac.

where did you see Sellers and Lagway making 4 million per year?

I thought there was nothing to this, but clearly I was wrong. Could be wrong again, but no-showing at practice to me, means he's gone. Even if he comes back, the first time he makes a mistake in a game, the boo-birds will roast him...he's dug his grave, unfortunately.

Agree with you BOT. Speaking as an old curmudgeon who values team play, loyalty, & all those other vanishing attributes.....the NIL, Portal & such ilk are losing me in college football. Nico & his daddy can play in the Californa penal league if this scenario it accurate.

Caron Beck basically did the exact same thing at UGA. UGA wanted him back. This is everywhere and the new reality until contracts are enforced or some other oversight is created.
UGA didn’t want Beck back after this last season. They had their guy in waiting.

Whatever happened, you can be sure the national media will blame UT! Stand strong Vols!

Because they dump a huge majority of funds into football while we try to split money to be an "everything school"
Thanks for the post.

Chris Lowe just said it’s a tough path for Nico to return and the 104.5 zone host said “he’s gone.” Lowe didn’t say a word.

I love my Vols! I hate this as I thought we were on our way up w/o drama. Some say other schools face this but I still say TN has more drama than other elite schools- unless it’s UGA and traffic violations. 😆

TN does pay. I don't think losing Nico will lose us recruits either.
Nico was the first million dollar man and set the market, the next guy is alwats going to be higher then the guy before him. Look at the NFL. Hurts got paid, then got upped by Burrow, Lamar and Dak.
Hurts can't turn around and say hey I want more than those guys after agreeing to his contract.
Faison will come in and get what the market is at that time, and if he balls out his season I'd bet if he asked for more he would get it. Let's be honest here. Nico didn't look like the bill of goods that he was sold to be and we made the playoffs thanks to our Defense and Run game. Not Nico

Honestly I've defended Nico's play last year but if he doesn't want to be here, I don't want him to be here either. It is what it is. He had the leverage when we signed him but we have other QBs now. If he wants to buy in, I'll welcome that too.

And to posters who say it isn’t our money paying NIL. Ticket prices increased to help fund NIL. And I paid it, plus gave to Spyre. I just don’t see how we are in this situation as surely TN knew Nico was unhappy w his deal.

Like Gibson, it's leverage. This late after Spring ball, Nico leaving is harder on UT than it is on him.

=IF= UT thinks Nico, like Gibson, is a player they cannot lose, they'll pay up and Nico plays at UT, likely gets drafted pretty well and starts trying to prove he behind in the NFL.

If not, he transfers for a year and is still likely drafted pretty well and starts trying to prove he belongs in the NFL.

Either way, the goal is the same. Get to the NFL. If you can squeeze some extra millions on the way, gravy.

D*ck move without a doubt but pro players make d*ck moves for money all the time.

Can’t wait to see Merk and Mac battle it out.

They may both be better than Nico and the reason the Vols “aren’t blinking” on these “negotiations”…
plus incoming talent behind them. I hesitate to roast him, not knowing whole story, but optics don't look good. And, if true, see ya.

It could still be "salvageable" for Nico here if they should say something about a shoulder or other minor injury at this time.

Otherwise, the team leader does not just sit out for no good reason and then come bopping right back. 🤔
