read the last rites for the sham of a program named Cal. After suffering through all the bather about how they were a "national contender" and a "program on the rise," it's good to see my unwavering assessment of the Urine Colored Bears vindicated. They are an abject fraud.

You can put Boston College in that category, as well. Although I think the only people that bought into that program were the announcers of ACC games.

I'm sure the hype machine will start firing again after the bowl games are played. Then we can go through the same motions again next year.

I remember someone on this site saying after the first few weeks of the season that the top four teams were LSU, USC, Oklahoma, and..... Georgia Tech.

3 losses all came down to a single play. they just had too many injuries and stupid plays.

usc is still the most talent loaded team in the country and cal did run for 200 yards against usc's defense and cals offensive line dominated usc for most of the game. the injured longshore has become cals weak-link who lost them another game.

if cal is a fraud, what does that make the whole sec east with tennessee its likely champions? its satisfying to see teams that beat you lose but no reason to disrespect a talented team that is struggling.

Tennessee has gotten a lot better over the season. The defense has been almost completely revamped. Regardless, our offense ran wild on you guys and we've been absolutely dominated on that side of the ball in several SEC games. Additionally, this is probably the weakest the top of the SEC East has been in maybe a decade.

Last I checked, the SECE has 5 eligible bowl teams, the same as the whole PAC-10, with Vandy 1 win away from making the entire SECE bowl elgible.

What does that make the entire PAC-10?

my point wasnt actually to 'insult' the sec or specifically the east, but only to say the language used by hatvol seemed a bit over the top to me.

i definitely have no interest in debating conferences vs conferences. i just enjoy college football and stuff like that annoys me..

When your program touts itself as a national player, then constantly vomits all over themselves when it matters, you're a fraud. Period. Call me when Cal does something that merits even a modicum of respect.

cal played it's first 5 games like a national power and that backed up the media hype.

if you think nothing the cal program has accomplished merits a 'modicum' of respect then there isnt any point in arguing with you.

cal has a long football tradition beginning before tennessee even had a team, they had similar great years of success during tennessees neyland years and beyond. cal then had a few fantastic years among many poor ones with coaching controversies and all kind of issues plaguing the team.

tedford has turned a team that hit bottom, 0-10 that had lost to stanford several straight years and taken them to 5 bowl games in 5 years. a team that competes for 4 and 5 star recruits.

rebuilding a program back to greatness is not an easy task and the progress has been impressive to say the least.

We beat you, SEC East leader. Doesn't merit any respect?

And the media touts us as a national player, not Tedford. Cal is the sexy pick every year to win the Pac-10 because we have flashy stars. We lucked into the #1 spot for 2 hours by circumstance, not effort. Our D-line and secondary are not that good, as you saw in our game. Longshore still cannot pivot off his back ankle, and Tedford has stubbornly stuck by him. Result? 9 picks, 4 games, 3 losses.

Of course, you'll go ahead and say "blah blah blah excuses excuses". I'm not sure why I bothered.

You beat Tennessee less impressively than a team that lost to Mississippi State today. Congratulations. Here's your cookie and a minor bowl bid for your troubles.

Two things:
1. I didn't realize the season was only 5 games long.
2. Real national programs have the depth to survive injuries.

Cal fans pimped Cal this year, too, BearNecessity. You know it.

This Cal team is doing what I predicted: finish 4th or 5th in the Pac 10. Teddy laughed at me, Droski laughed at me. But I was super right.

Cal still hasn't won a conference title under Tedford (and if you respond with 2006, you're pathetic).

I wasn't aware of a college fanbase that doesn't pimp their team.

Cal had the misfortune of having their best team (2004) when USC was at its height. And I'm pretty confident that with Tedford, we'll find the promised land soon enough (just like you did in the 90s).

Eventually, your team learns to come through. Just have to have faith.

I'm beginning to think Tedford isn't the guy to take Cal to the BIGGEST level. There are some coaches who can take a bad team and make them good. Those coaches sometimes can't go the whole way.

at least the University of Tennessee didn't wuss out and decide American football was "too dangerous" to play. Cal didn't have a football program from 1906 to 1915, they had rugby.

Wasn't that the year they were crying about the BCS then got blown out by A&M? :birgits_giggle:

You are missing one major point here, progress or not, they are still a mediocre team that can't even beat USC when they are having an off year.

And I hope you continue to compete for 4 and 5 star recruits, because maybe eventually you will see how little it matters. Tell me how many 4 and 5 star recruits Oregon has, and they nearly beat you, and are in line to compete for a national championship.

Man, mediocre is three straight 9-10 win seasons? Five straight winning seasons/bowl appearances after five bowl games in the past FIFTY years? I'm disappointed that we haven't leapt yet, but you have to be patient with these things. We're still trying to build a tradition. These things take time.

Some of you Vols fans have been pampered by a century of success. We've only had five years. Give us a break.

Yes - but the Pac-10 was rather pathetic before this year. It was decent last year but nothing to brag about. And then - it's arguably as good as the SEC this year.. and look at the results.

No, mediocre is three straight seasons without a conference championship with the supposed "talent" that you have. Mediocre is losing to teams like Oregon St. when you are the supposed 2nd best team in the country. I know this, I've lived it for the past ten years.

To be honest, I was more disappointed last year than this year, when we choked away the Rose Bowl in the desert. I expected this team would lose a few games coming into the season, considering we lost all our defensive stars to the draft.

And this is the worst year to use rankings as a barometer for best in the land during the middle of the season. We became #2 by circumstance, and even I knew we had far from earned it. Oregon State, UCLA, ASU, USC all had the tools to beat us (power running, fast defense), and they did. Inconsistent QB play and a weak defensive line and secondary have plagued us all year.
