I like this post. It’s a discussion as to WHY a long snapper is important enough to use an initial counter on, rather than, “Pruitt says so” or “you’re a star gazer.”
Thank you for recognizing and addressing the issue with reason, Sir. Actual football discussion makes for a nice change of pace on this board.
I had not thought about the snapper as a defender/tackler. That might be the best argument in favor of signing a LS. I’m still not completely sold, but I can see where you’re coming from.
Riley Lovingood made a great play vs Georgia last year downing a kick inside the five. We got a sack that caused a fumble and a TD for us that put us back in the game. They do more than just snap the ball.
And yet ... once there was another Vol from Greeneville, mostly playing on special teams, who did get his name noticed for good things, as he covered kicks like a demon. Late 70s ... Dee ReviereThe funny thing about this conversation is if this kid signs here, and we basically never think about him being on the team again, it's because every time he snapped the ball there was no problem at all and he did his job perfectly.
However, he screws up a snap on a crucial play and everyone in here who is upset about this will be all over it.
I personally hope he does get involved in a game winning trick play and we actually remember the kid for greatness.
Get a bad longsnapper then get back at me.Yeah. We signed one in Lovingood who hasn’t even started on both kicks and punts the last 3 years. He’s split those duties with Medford (a walk on). We wasted a scholarship/initial counter on a guy who wasn’t even the full time long snapper.
I get that programs do it. Dumb trends happen. This is one of them. Plenty of programs roll with walk ons and they’re not experiencing long snap disasters. It’s just not worth wasting an initial counter against the 25 limit on. If they earn a scholarship after walking on, great.
What's up Amsler, old wildorange here now known as Woodlawn Vol. I remember you from the old board I always like your thoughts on the Vols, hope all is well. GBO!!!!I like this post. Explain why major programs like Bama, USC, Virginia Tech, Oregon, FSU, Texas, Auburn, LSU, etc choose to spend an initial counter on them. Are you somehow smarter than all these programs? Do you really believe these coaches which are major college coaches really just follow trends?Instead of resorting to ad hominem fallacies and ironically calling them “nuanced,” someone PLEASE show how long snapping with walk ons is somehow not working vs. how long snapping with initial counters is working with far more success. To my knowledge, Lovingood is the only initial counter we’ve had as a LS and he couldn’t even beat out Medford for the duty of long snapping on kicks.
Has there been some rash of bad snaps I’m not aware of? It’s a pretty routine play. Do we need to start offering holders out of high school now too?
And “Pruitt thinks it’s good” isn’t an argument. If it were, we might as well shut down the board and all defer to every decision our coach makes as being the right one. Sometimes coaches follow coaching trends simply because they’re trends, not because they make sense. This seems to be one of those.

It just takes one bad snap to ruin a game, or possibly even a season.Selection bias. They guys you see take the field on Saturdays and Sundays (and the guys that are in the running for top spot at these camps) are all good, so you will rarely see bad snaps from them. There are thousands of bad long snappers at the high school level, but you never see or hear about them.
And recruiting sites don't even pretend to care about specialists. 247's rankings shouldn't be of concern.
I'll trust this so-called "Saban" guy knows what he's doing, just like Pruitt...And has Alabama’s long snapping blown away the long snapping of the schools that just use walk ons?
When Tennessee’s other 84 scholarships are being filled by more draft picks than any school in America, as Alabama’s are, maybe then we can waste the 85th on a long snapper.
