'21 TN OL Dietrick Pennington (Clemson commit)

“It was a couple of them that I planned on going to that had to be postponed,” said Pennington, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 140 overall prospect and No. 8 offensive guard in the 2021 class and the No. 1 junior from the state of Tennessee.

“I was planning on coming down to see a Tennessee practice, and there were a couple other (visits planned). I just don’t remember.”

While Pennington hasn’t been back to Knoxville since attending a spring practice at Tennessee in March 2019, he said the Vols have continued to make him a priority.

Among the teams recruiting him hardest, he said “Tennessee is number one right now,” talking with him more frequently than anybody else. Tee Martin, the Vols’ wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator, has taken over as Pennington’s primary recruiter for Tennessee over the past few months.

“I’m hearing a lot from them. If not daily, then it’s every couple days,” Pennington said.

“They’re trying to get a lot of in-state guys, so I can see why they’re interested. They basically said that I’m a top priority right now.”

Pennington said he has spoken with Vols offensive line coach Will Friend “a couple times” and head coach Jeremy Pruitt “a few times,” but Martin recently has taken on a bigger role in his recruitment.

“We talk a lot,” Pennington said of Martin. “He’s just relatable. He’s a cool guy.”

Dietrick Pennington
OL; Cordova, Tenn.

Pennington is a four-star and one of the best prospects in the state. The Memphis native’s recruitment is still wide-open, and Will Friend and Tee Martin have taken the lead on his recruitment. He was scheduled to make a few visits this spring, including his first return to Tennessee since over a year ago, but the recruiting shutdown squashed those plans for now. He’s a major priority on the Vols’ recruiting board, and though he projects as a likely offensive tackle, he could play defensive line, too.

This young man feeling the Vols or is he just waiting on the green light from Clemson?

dunno. not much out there on him at this point.

i think it would be important to get him on campus at some point, but that's just speculation. it's obvious that we've made him some kind of priority, but he seems like he's in demand at a couple of different schools.

i don't know that anybody's got a good read on where this kid is right now??

Again, can you provide examples? Saying most TN kids hate UT is a pretty big statement.
omg. it's a generalization because a lot of TN kids really couldn't care less about repping the home state school. so many transplant families in the mid state and Memphis, well being Memphis, "in state" for TN has never meant the same thing as in state for FL, GA, LSU, Bama etc...does.

in other words, there's a reason why people freaked out a little bit when the #1 player in Alabama chose TN...hell they freaked out a few years ago when what's his name, the WR, was #1 in Bama nd picked Clemson.

it just doesn't happen often. it happens regularly where top players in TN go elsewhere, and TN in many cases was never even a consideration. it's almost expected to be honest. this year no different, baringstool picked clemson. and no one batted an eye.

and the point about not doing much for them, well, i give you derek dooley not knowing who von bell was. or butch jones not evern realy recruitng what's his name that went to ND, harrison smith i think? that may not be right though....

anyway, plush we've sucked for more than a decade, so kids that are college age right now, have never even known TN as a championship caliber program, hell....not even as a relevant program.

with some kids it's almost a double edged swoard. other programs like GA, BAma, Clemson, Auburn etc...can come in and offer these kids with zero penalty if they don't take them. so sometims TN holds off on a kid that may otherwise look like he should be a take......so the choice is...offer and hope he is what we hope he so we can/should definitely take him....or..don't offer, let it play out and offer late, and be told "no" because we were late.

it's happened recently. and to me, that's just BS, because if hte kid really, really wants to go to UT, then the timing of the UT offer shouldn't matter.

how many times do we get in on a prospect from GA or Bama or LA or whereever, and we're told "welre in good shape......unless Bama/GA/LSU winds up getting serious here"

that ish don't happen with TN kids. they get an offer from UGA/BAma etc....and then we offer.........nobody cares, doesn't make UGA or Bama flinch at all.

so. that's basically it for me.

Thank you for saying it before I did...you summed it up nicely

I know it's a generalization, but it's factually inaccurate. They said most Tennessee players dislike UT and we've let them down so many times. All I was asking for are some examples. All things considered I think we've done pretty well with instate players during our decade crawl through the desert.

I think it's very rare that we slow play a talented instate kid. Sometimes it's bites us, but that happens to every school. This years class in Tennessee is pretty weak so we're having to go out of state to find elite talent. At this point, I don't think anyone is complaining with the players we're pulling in.

All the kids that chose ND, Clemson, LSU, OSU, Bama, and Auburn were recruited by Tennessee

I think as hot as we've been if your a Tennessee kid and not thinging hard about making the jump then you are probably looking to go elsewhere. Nothing wrong with that they should go where they want but I don't believe it will be a miss by this staff.

well, that's where the examples are. we go hard after some of these kids like we did with two of the highest rated kids in TN 2 cycles back...forget the names...the DB that went to LSU but was a helluva baseball player....and the DL from Memphis that we went after pretty hard that went to UGA. on the other side of that is kids like Trey Knox or woodi washington or rybka or the defensive kid that went aTm....all of which felt like TN slow played them and in what almost felt like an attempt to punish UT, really didn't consider us when asked to camp, or if we offered late. oh, and that other defensive linement from West TN that went to UGA, and he literally said it was because were late to the party....we offered the same week UGA did.

and there's still folks out there that thinkg TN is doing the in state kids "wrong". which is just BS, because for a relatively large % of them, they simply do not care about TN...if they did, then they'd go camp. if they did, they wouldn't care when the offer came.

Jay Hardy last year....we didn't build a relationship with him....yet he was commmitted for months?

anyway.

i just absolutely hate the topic of "in state" when it comes to TN recruiting. it just doesn't mean the same thing here that it does in other states. heck, Colson this cycle...

i do think we'v'e done much better the last two cycles on targeting and getting the kids we really wanted.
there's just no pleasing everyone regarding this topic.
