“It was a couple of them that I planned on going to that had to be postponed,” said Pennington, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 140 overall prospect and No. 8 offensive guard in the 2021 class and the No. 1 junior from the state of Tennessee.
“I was planning on coming down to see a Tennessee practice, and there were a couple other (visits planned). I just don’t remember.”
While Pennington hasn’t been back to Knoxville since attending a spring practice at Tennessee in March 2019, he said the Vols have continued to make him a priority.
Among the teams recruiting him hardest, he said “Tennessee is number one right now,” talking with him more frequently than anybody else.
Tee Martin, the Vols’ wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator, has taken over as Pennington’s primary recruiter for Tennessee over the past few months.
“I’m hearing a lot from them. If not daily, then it’s every couple days,” Pennington said.
“They’re trying to get a lot of in-state guys, so I can see why they’re interested. They basically said that I’m a top priority right now.”
Pennington said he has spoken with Vols offensive line coach
Will Friend “a couple times” and head coach
Jeremy Pruitt “a few times,” but Martin recently has taken on a bigger role in his recruitment.
“We talk a lot,” Pennington said of Martin. “He’s just relatable. He’s a cool guy.”
