You don’t have to find with endowment. The current giving has to be influenced to go to athletics. There has never been a culture of athletics there so it’s a tall task but if they ever got an influencer to do it, they could be a major force. Especially in the era of NIL.
They still won't be a force because of academic standards. Franklin got them to lower the standards to get better athletes. He won games but it ended in a rap* scandal. Lea just got them to do the same for him in order to bring in better talent from the portal. We'll see how that works out, but they will never bring in enough to be more than middle of the pack consistently. Just because they'll never be on a level playing field through academic admissions. Even with a top flight NIL initiative.

Yet somehow Stanford is consistently competitive with higher academic achievement than Vanderbilt?

As @allvolrecruiting stated, Stanford isn't in the SEC, and has become a PAC-12 bottom feeder for the past 5 seasons. I'm not denying the nice run they had for about 10 years, but I definitely wouldn't consider that consistently competitive. They historically sucked before that and have sucked since.
