Unless of course you are an experienced coach fully vested in taking the best players you can find with recruiting consultants on retainer studying every second of tape and doing all sorts of athletic and personal evaluations... who then decides a kid is a take this early.I didn't criticize the player. I didn't say taking guys with weak offer lists was terrible. I even qualified by reiterating it was my opinion. So what exactly are you whining about?
I don't think it's a smart strategy to take low rated, poor offer list guys, this far in advance. If you want to disagree with that, try adding something to the discussion instead of just tossing out nonsense insults.
I would say that while it’s okay to questions coaches decisions, in this case I would be very happy to get this commitment. 1) He has added 30lbs to his 6’6 frame in the last year and now stands at 280lbs. Staff wasn’t 100% on board until they saw how he moved with the new weight. 2) Rodney Garner is an elite recruiter and developer at DL and if he thinks Robinson can cut it, then I’m inclined to believe him. I have to think he could get involved with a lot of players if he wanted to. 3) Kid has a marine corps father so I have a feeling he’s going to take the tough coaching from Garner well.
Thanks for that post. Like almost all HS DL recruits, he needs development. He needs more power in his lower half so he can play lower. He tends to "pop up" too quickly off the ball.I would say that while it’s okay to questions coaches decisions, in this case I would be very happy to get this commitment. 1) He has added 30lbs to his 6’6 frame in the last year and now stands at 280lbs. Not insulting you but this kid's video looks really good. Now the coaching staff has stamped their approval on his potential to help the program.
The departure of Burns and the discussion around a scholarship non-offer relates here. Apparently Heupel liked a WR recruit while Burns wasn't sold. So they held off offering him. If that's the method which it probably is then this kid was a take for the entire staff including RG.
Coaches make recruiting mistakes all the time. But I think you kind of answered your own objection. If they're taking his commitment then they have him somewhere at the top of their board.
And people offered their opinion on your opinion. It's a message board. Go figure.Your post right after this is a bit better summary of my feelings. If he doesn't have a ton of offers and was basically viewed as a lock, then you don't necessarily need to take him this early.
He could get hurt, he could gain bad weight over the summer, he could have a poor senior season, he could start dating a girl that goes to Georgia, etc. Any number of things could change. What wouldn't change is if we end up needing space and have to drop a TN kid late in the process, that's always a bad look. Clearly, none of that could happen as well. All I was trying to say, before the entire board jumped on me, was I thought it was a bit early strategically. That's my opinion.

I understand your point. I do. Thing is the coaches think he's good enough to lock up now... and by implication believe there are risks they don't want by leaving him out there for others to find.Your post right after this is a bit better summary of my feelings. To play the devil's advocate, you can't waste a scholarship at a position of need on a low probability recruit.6'5"...270...at a position we need depth in big time.
Lol at the "questions"...
Rodney Garner wants him. That’s all that matters. End of discussion. Now welcome the kid to Rocky Top and move on.Your post right after this is a bit better summary of my feelings. Who says it's a waste? To play the devil's advocate, you can't waste a scholarship at a position of need on a low probability recruit.
My argument to Probably in Class has aligned with what you just wrote. The coaches apparently think this guy is likely to help and they can't afford to take a ton of bad risks at this point.
