The Class of 2023 wide receiver from Morristown-Hamblen East High School in Morristown, Tenn., announced Wednesday that he has committed to the Vols as a preferred walk-on, and they officially announced his addition late Wednesday morning. He said he chose them over a scholarship offer from Division II Carson-Newman, while Mercer also was among the teams that showed interest in him.

The 6-foot-4, 194-pound Roberts said he called Tennessee director of scouting Brandon Lawson on Sunday night to inform the Vols of his decision. Roberts said it was an easy decision to take advantage of the chance to play at Tennessee. “It was like an answered prayer, honestly, and a huge opportunity,” he said. “I kind of knew this was an opportunity set before me, and I was going to make the most of it.”

Roberts said he “was born and raised in Tennessee,” and the idea of playing for the Vols is “really exciting” to him. He admitted that he has already thought about what it will be like to put on an orange jersey and run through the “T” formed by the Pride of the Southland Marching Band before his first game at Neyland Stadium. “I can’t wait,” he said. “It’s going to be an unreal experience.”

I hoping some of these guys contribute at some point and be diamond in the roughs. Now that the program is contributing at a higher level, I expect the walk on program to get guys that can play at lower levels and have scholarship offers. We know some of these guys can make plays when going up against Power 5 schools. We've seen it on the field and the NFL is filled with guys from small schools.

These guys contribute, but we usually don't see the fruits of their labor directly. They push scholarship guys by trying to out work them every single day. During the season and all off season. Every now and then these guys get a chance to shine. There are a variety of circumstances as to why someone may elect to walk on. Heupel has managed to bring in lots of guys that bleed orange.

He is a Preferred WalkOn. Staff must think more highly of him than helping in practice. This normally means a scholly after 1 year of development.

This kid will have to gain at least 35 pounds to play TE.

it's possible. And Warren has been 250 for 2 seasons now. So he gained that 39 lbs in about 2+ years.

This kid is a decent athlete. I'd prefer the Bolton kid who's already 225 get a look at TE first. But i think it would be awesome if this kid actually contributes in 3 years.
