To All Those Doubting Gruden....

He has not been coaching cause the bucs have been paying him. If he took another coaching job he forfeit the money they owed him.

Ah ha. So that's the acceptable reason there, but Fulmer hasn't been coaching because he sucks and no one wants him, right? That logic is complete BS.

Has Gruden ever coached college football? How long has it been since he has coached any team? He would bring a good staff, but the money might not be worth the risk.

I fall in to the "possible, but not necessarily probable" category as well. But, I'm looking at this from a different perspective. Gruden's kids will be in college in the not-so-distant future... Perhaps he wants to be associated with a University where he knows his kids will be in good hands. Plus, moms are very influential when it comes to a young man deciding where he wants to go to college. Why wouldn't Cindy Gruden be influencing them to go her own alma mater? It's a stretch, I know. But it certainly seems possible.

Reasons against Gruden:

1. Hart specifically said he will look for a coach with extensive experience in coaching a college team (translation: gotta be willing to deal with not offending all those UT alums that fund this money wagon...not happening).

2. He's a Yankee which spells "culture clash" ..unless he's able to pull out a winning season on short notice and pixie dust. (translation: no way he's going to be "endearing" when his gruff demeanor brushes off the fans/alum and he goes rogue in desparation. When he gets tired of dealing with "all ya'll" cuz this turned out to be a tough gig and our talent all leave next year for the NFL...we'll have another future "firee" sucking us dry because he's drawing a payout)

and finally...

3. Why leave the star studded NFL/MNF gig (translation: when hey...you could be getting your hands dirty cleaning up our UT mess...and for probably way less money and no "glam"...yippee?)

So your saying there is a challenge and a risk? That's exactly what egotistical coaches want and live for! If he truly wants to coach then that's exactly what he's after in my opinion and Tennessee is perfect in every sense.

To number 3: The same reason athletes end up broke 5 years after they quit playing. Coaches and athletes are competitive. Players end up broke because they can't quit competing. 99% of those athletes who end up broke were financially set for life but, they compete with other athletes monetarily and success in business. More times than not they aren't smart and end up broke. Coaches always want to prove themselves and their legacy. Gruden's legacy could be greatly impacted by collegiate success.

To number 2: He married a Knoxville native. I'd say he is more than familiar with the culture and is probably over the "culture clash" 20 years into a southern gal.

1. $$$
2. He may be more comfortable being a NFL coach since he has been one before.
3. Hart may not want him
4. He may not want to coach at all, I imagine being at ESPN isn't that bad.
5. He may no want to move from Tampa

Hart emphasized precisely this point when he stated that, if he were a candidate for the position, he would consider it an extraordinary opportunity/challenge to be the guy who turned our program around.

We've been down this road two previous times with Gruden. I would love to have him a as a coach but I'm not buying into him coming to be our coach until I see him and that giant super bowl ring of his shinning during his press conference.

With respect to no. 1, you may well be correct. I will have to go back and listen to the press conference again. However, I recall Hart emphasizing both experience and success as a head coach. I don't recall him specifically limiting those criteria to the ranks of college coaches.

There is no real reason why he would coach UT. He has a great job. He is an NFL guy and he can get an NFL job anytime. Obviously he likes the NFL and likes MNF. Don't think he is gonna give all that up to come to live in Knoxville and coach the Vols...Save yourself some heartbreak and quit thinking he is gonna coach the Vols...

Gruden only makes 4.3 million for MNF the booster I'm guessing will be willing to pay 7

yep!! Gruden WILL LEAVE within 3 yrs IF he were to come coach UT...I SERIOUSLY DO NOT see him here for the long haul...but I will be surprised if he did...but we NEED a Gruden to come in and restore order and pride among UT Nation!!!!!!!!!! Come on Jon!!! UT NEEDS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If he will be gone in 3 seasons then why do all the rumors call for a 10 year deal?

He didn't specify.

Because people like to make crap up and assume that because we're Tennessee he would just up and leave after a few years.

My take on this situation is that if he wants to come coach here then he will be here for the long haul or until he gets fired. I think his wife possibly wanting to move closer to her family and everything make this a possible retirement job.

Okay, here's the problem with a Gruden hire: Tennessee is all about tradition. And hiring Gruden would effectively end the longstanding Tennessee tradition of Gruden-hire speculation.

I would love to see us hire Gruden for the instant credibility and to put the SEC on notice that we are going to do whatever it takes. What I do question is what it would take to get him. I think we would have to make him the highest paid coach in college football without him actually proving anything. He would likely get upwards of 6-7 mil per year if he took an NFL job so I'm thinking we would have to give him at least 6 mil per. Saban would like the financial aspect of us hiring Gruden since he would immediately get a raise so that he remained the highest paid coach. Saban will make an average of 5.62 million per year through 2012. That said I just want a good coach if thats Gruden fine but if not that's fine to. I still don't see Gruden coaching college over the NFL but I guess we'll see. I do hope if he isn't coming he won't string us along. One thing about it he hasn't denied anything and has done what anyone would do if they were coming by not saying anything at all.

You are correct. He did not specify "college experience". He said head coaching experience.
