To 'take a dive' or 'not to take a dive'...thats the question...

Lets assume you are the majority owner of a NBA team. The team hes never won a championship and in fact haven't had a winning season in 10+ years. You have good fans but ticket sales, merchandising, etc is suffering...if you can't stop the bleeding you may to consider drastic measures including moving the team... A week of the season remains and you were neck and neck with a couple of other teams as to who was going to end up with the worst record. The other 2 teams have a less difficult remaining schedule than you do.

FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS EXERCISE lets assume the team that finishes with the worst record for the season GETS the first draft choice in the upcoming draft.

In the draft there is a 'can't miss' once in a lifetime player available...a Lebron James kind of player.

The way the rules are constructed there is no negotiating in terms of salary and his salary is predetermined regardless if he's a 'typical run of the mill' number 1 draft pick or a 'once in a lifetime player.

Do you order your team to do whatever is required to make certain they finish with the worst record....bottom line do you order your team to intentionally lose games?

Yes or No?

It's a fact some teams have done that before. I see your point, but even if you finish last in the NBA you aren't guaranteed the first pick like you are in football. There's a lottery, you get more Ping-Pong balls, but I've seen the worst team not pick first. But as professionals, I would say you play hard and earn your money every time out.

To start the season I might have tried arguing he is a little overrated. But the more I watch him the more I think his best years are ahead of him.

When he starts being more aggressive offensively and taking the ball to the basket, he is going to be he!! to guard.

Im leaning towards him bc I feel he has the highest ceiling and can be a dynamic scorer.

As a sixer fan we are in full tank mode......we are going doooooooowwwwwwnnnnnn......wouldnt throw games but i would want the best chance at that first pick

You guys wont tank faster than the Hawks. Of course our excuse is injuries but I'll take a top 10 pick in 3 rounds or so of drafting.

I like Jabari Parker's IQ and overall skillset more than Wiggins. Parker reminds me of a young Paul Pierce IMO. Wiggins is a freak athlete. I think they'll both be all stars. It's similar to when Durant and Lebron came out. Not saying they're on the same level as Durant and Lebron, just that you can't go wrong with either.

by posting it in the UT bball forum instead of the NBA forum I would say you absolutely connected it to college ball

He absolutely did connect it to college ball by posting it here. Not only that, but running a business and running a sports franchise do not always compare. It is well documented that you don't own a franchise to make money, especially in the NBA and MLB. The most successful franchises are those that spend more money, and that doesn't equate to being business savy. Trust me, Mark Cuban didn't buy the Mavs to make money. It is a toy for him. You can be fiscally responsible, but you get into it for the wrong reasons if you buy a sports franchise to make money on an annual basis. The only way it will really help is in the valuation of the franchise over time.

Give me the one or two pick and call it a day....I love both players....just hope we wouldnt screw it up LOL

Dang man, you guys have 5 first round picks this year.? lol at the mock draft I am looking at having Embid and McDermott to the 6ers.

I really like Mcdermott but am really worried about his athleticism translating to the NBA.

He reminds me of a young Hakeem the Dream. I think he'll be alright, he's just raw.

My biggest lock for a pretty good NBA player would be McDermott. What's your thought on him?

The word is out...he's an American Novitzki. No defense at all and wants to hang out on the perimeter. I'd pick someone else. No 'lock' at all.

100% yes. Any other answer is moronic. There are two places to be in the NBA, a legit contender or the bottom of the barrel. The worst spot for an NBA team is in the middle.

Look at a team like the Atlanta Hawks, just good enough to make the playoffs, which is too good for a draft pick worth anything but not good enough to actually contend.

In the NBA, you either contend or you bottom out.

No. I never want any team I'm coaching to think losing is ever an option, let alone a good one.

You can have your pride, I'll take the once in a generation player. Sacrifice one year for a decade of contending? It's a no-brainer.

You still coach to win. You just do it with the deck stacked against you roster wise.

I just noticed the part of the OP that said intentionally lose games. That's a definite no. Like I said in the above post, you play to win but with a limited roster. Young guys get experience and you get the once in a generation player.
