Boston College- 14

Art Galiffa picked up a faltering Tennessee team that had made only one first down in the first half and drove it 63 yards after the third quarter kickoff for the game‐tying touchdown.

Galiffa completed five passes in a row in the march, the payoff being a 2‐yard toss to halfback Hal Wantland for the touchdown. Fred Martin converted.

Martin kicked a 25 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to give UT a 10-7 lead. The game was still in doubt, until Tom Fisher intercepted a BC pass and returned it 22 yards for a TD later in the quarter to put the Eagles away.

LSU - 10

Larry Seivers came riding in on his a whitehorse, following the script to a "T," to rescue the Vols over a stingy Tiger team.

LSU had UT on the ropes, dominating the game until the fourth quarter. Tennessee lead 10-7 at the half, but an injury to Stanley Morgan hindered UTs offense. LSU was able to tie the game at 10-10 going into the fourth quarter with a FG, after missing three earlier chances.

In the 4th, Randy Wallace finally found a groove, with the help of two acrobatic catches covering 81 yards to Seivers. A shovel pass to Mike Gayles gave UT the lead. A huge interception by my good friend Ernie Ward, set up a short TD run by Gayles gave UT the 24-10 victory.

I met Mr. Watson at an airshow at El Toro MCAS (California) back in 92, iirc. I had done my share of the airshow and was privileged to be at the Martin reception tent. There he was and I approached him. We chatted a bit and I asked him what he was doing at the time. "Just making a living off of who I used to be." Humility personified.

Georgia - 17

Peyton Manning never lost to the Bulldogs, and 1996 might have been his finest game against them. He threw for 371 yards and 2 TDs in Athens, at one point completing a school-record 11 straight passes, as the Vols won their sixth straight over Georgia.

Joey Kent had 110 yards receiving and a TD, while Jay Graham pounded out 81 yards and a TD.

Late interceptions by Raymond Austin and Terry Fair helped seal the game in the fourth quarter.

UT won their 6th straight game in the series.

UT - 33
Mississippi State - 21

A near-six-minute, fourth-quarter drive resulting in a field goal proved to be a key possession as No. 25 Tennessee held off a strong Mississippi State upset bid 33-21 Saturday afternoon at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field. With the win, UT improved to 4-2 and 2-1 in Southeastern Conference play. State fell to 4-3, 1-3 in the league, while dropping their fifth straight to the Volunteers in the series.

Leading 27-21 early in the fourth quarter - with the game still very much in doubt - Tennessee mounted a solid ball control drive, marching 69 yards on 14 plays and eating up 5:42 on the clock. The drive was capped by a 26-yard field goal from Daniel Lincoln, handing the Vols a 30-21 lead with 5:45 remaining.

Tennessee would shut down the Bulldog offense, which had a very productive day, the rest of the way, ultimately shutting them out of scoring completely in the fourth period. Meanwhile, Lincoln would tack on another field goal late for the final points of the afternoon.

The Vols were led by a solid performance from senior quarterback Eric Ainge who completed 22-of-36 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once - the only turnover in a well-played game in that area for both teams. Ainge was complemented by receiver Lucas Taylor, who hauled in 11 catches for 186 yards and a score. Running back Arian Foster also greatly contributed to the UT offensive effort, which produced 470 yards from scrimmage, by rushing 21 times for 139 yards and one score.

JW Carter, the Vols big fullback, was lost on the first play. That didn’t stop the Vols from racking up big plays on the day Less than three minutes later, George Canale raced 39 yards for a TD. Jack Nichols and Bob Morton also scored TDs on the ground.

Mallon Faircloth threw two touchdown passes to help calm the Hurricane.

Seivers would have had a solid NFL career as a possession receiver.

After two bad years under Harvey Robinson, Robert Neyland hired Bowden Wyatt to restore the glory days for the Vols. Coming off a losing season, though, expectations were low for this team, and they got off to an 1-2 start.

However, they had just beaten the Chattanooga Mocs after beginning 0-2. And at the time, there was no better team to get on the right track against than the Alabama Crimson Tide. After going 4-5-2 the year before, Bama was 0-2 under first-year head coach Jennings B. Whitworth. So Wyatt’s team, with junior back Johnny Majors, traveled into Legion Field looking to get on a roll.

Johnny Majors ran for 117 yards on 30 carries, completed 4-5 passes for 44 yards, returned 3 punts for 51 yards, and had kickoff returns for 53 yards. Majors had a rushing touchdown and one passing TD in the 20-0 Vols victory

The #2 ranked Tide came to the World’s Fair to play the 2-2-1 Vols riding an eleven game winning streak in the series. Down 14-3, Willie Gault caught a 52 yrd touchdown to gain some momentum. Up 27-21 in the fourth, Chuck Coleman took a handoff and raced 34 yrds to the end zone. The two pt conversion put the Vols up 35-21. Bama would cut the lead to seven and got the ball back late. With 17 seconds left, Mike Terry picked off a tipped pass in the end zone to secure the victory.

Bear Bryant lost his last game vs UT and said,”The folks in Knoxville are happy. The folks who graduated from Tennessee are happy. The folks who live in Tennessee are happy. And all those folks have every right to be happy. They lined up and beat us.”

Alabama- 0

Bear Bryant’s 1970 Alabama team came to Neyland Stadium hoping to snap a three-game losing streak to Tennessee. Doug Dickey, the architect of the streak, was gone, replaced by the nation’s youngest head coach, 28-year-old Bill Battle.

Sorry, Bear. UT’s streak grew to four. The Vols won, 24-0, the Tide blanked for the first time since 1959.

Tennessee’s offense did its part, but the heroes were on defense. The Vols intercepted eight passes.

Eight. That’s not a misprint.

Pick No. 1: Neb Hayden, making a rare start, was picked off by Tim Priest on Alabama’s second possession. Priest’s return to the Tide 16 set up a Tennessee touchdown and 7-0 lead.

Pick No. 2: Second quarter, Hunter was intercepted by linebacker Jamie Rotella. Tennessee punted.

Pick No. 3: With 18 seconds left in the half, linebacker Jackie Walker intercepted Hunter. The half ended 7-0.

Pick No. 4: Early in the third quarter Conrad Graham picked off Hayden and returned across midfield. The Vols drove for a touchdown and 14-0 lead.

Pick No. 5: Priest again, intercepting Hunter for a 22-yard return.

Pick No. 6. Late third quarter still, it was Bobby Majors’ turn, picking off Hunter. That set up a field goal early in the fourth quarter. Tennessee, 17-0.

Pick No. 7: Soon after Alabama received the kickoff following the field goal, Hayden’s pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Walker. 24-0.

Pick No. 8: For good measure, Priest got his third interception of the day,

In Doug Dickey’s final year as UT Coach, the Vols traveled to Birmingham to face the Tide and a record crowd at Legion Field. Bobby Scott was named Southeast Offensive player of the week for his 2TDS, but the game will always be remembered as Steve Kiner’s day! The All American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year had 11 tackles and 3 Assists, 5 tackles for loss, an interception, a caused fumble, and 4 other QB pressures. His efforts earned him National Lineman of the Week by SI and the AP. Bobby Majors also returned a punt for a TD and Jackie Walker returned an interception for a touchdown in the Vols 41-14 victory!

Sounds like something Curt would say. Grew up together in Crossville. He now resides in Memphis.

Maybe if they wear Crimson jerseys at Neyland, the Vols will shut them out again.

Tennessee’s star quarterback, Tony Robinson went down with an injury. Things looked bleak........Daryl Dickey had to finish the job. He did just that, allowing the Vols to hold on for their fourth straight win in the series en route to Johnny Majors’ first SEC Championship as UT head coach.

The "Sugar Vols" are one of the most beloved teams in Tennessee history. They went from unranked to start the season to winning the SEC championship and routing No. 2 Miami in the Sugar Bowl. The Vols didn't lose again after upsetting No. 15 Alabama. Linebacker Dale Jones made a play that Tennessee fans will remember forever. With Alabama driving, Jones batted Mike Shula's pass not far from the line of scrimmage and cradled the ball just before it hit the ground. Alabama still had one last shot, but Van Tiffin's 61-yard field goal attempt was short.
