Good article on Helton's brief stint as starting quarterback back in 1994 (though I believe Strange got UCLA score wrong).

Mike Strange: Todd Helton

"Helton nearly rallied the shell-shocked Vols to victory at UCLA. They trailed 18-0 in the fourth quarter before losing 23-21. Helton’s most memorable play wasn’t a pass but a slobber-knocking block during an end-around run by Nilo Silvan.

“Our whole sideline erupted,” Fulmer said. “That got everybody back in the game.”"

I still remember that block. Thought someone posted a video of it on here recently

Forgive him for the wrong score. He learned from jJohn Adams.

I was there. That block was awesome! There was a streaker at halftime that made everyone crack up. That was a fun trip. The team stayed at the Red Lion Hotel. Went to visit with some of the players after the game. Memorable trip to Pasadena.

I remember CPF telling a story about Helton keeping peanut butter sandwiches in his hand warmers because he knew he wouldn't be going in once Peyton started taking off.

I was out there as well. I was a SR at UT and we had a room at the Ritz in Pasadena. It was such a cool trip.

I remember a few hits in the game but I had some classes with Colquitt (we weren't friends) and I wanted him to succeed so badly. That was sad.

Found it. The play starts at 49:43 (part of the evening highlights). Helton's block comes just after Silvan cuts back across the field.

Nice find!

By the way, Keith Jackson's comments at the 3:20 mark in this video led to the black trim on the white jerseys that debuted at the S. Carolina game later that year.

I still remember listening to sports talk radio in Knoxville the week of the S. Carolina game when they announced the black trim on the unis for that week. This caller called in and said, "Well there are two things that have now left Tennessee football....Winning & the Big Orange."

And that was a 7-4 year. For you young people that's what it was like 20 years ago.

Also, for you posters whining about UT's schedule this season, look at 1994.

At UCLA ranked 14
At UGA ranked 23
Home UF ranked 1
At Miss St.
Home Wash. St. ranked 17 (#1 D in the country)
