I dont know if any of yall remember Big John Tate, but before he was selling his autograph for the price of a nickel bag, I have his autograph on a program where he was on the card. Was really proud of that thing when I was little. and then...

I remember Big John Tate very well. He was a rising cinderella story for a while there. I paid to see him fight live in K-town. We chanted BIG JOHN TATE! BIG JOHN TATE! BIG awwwwwww!

Sad the way his story ended. He was an Olympian and WBA World Heavyweight Champion for about 6 months late '79, I think.

Drugs ruined all that. Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

I watched John Tate while I was in school. He was on the card over at the Knoxville Coliseum. He knocked a guy out cold by hitting him in the stomach. Sounded like a shot went off. I was in the back of the seats but could hear it like I was on the front row.

I could care less about a single player's signed item for the most part, unless it's something original (e.g. the bat Hank Aaron hit his first HR with in the majors). Something like that is cool, but a card or photo, meh.

On the other hand, a team signed item like a '98 game ball signed by the whole team is awesome.

Plus, they never really lose their value unless something bad comes up later. Like the 7 Mark McGuire rookie cards I had when he broke the HR record and they were going for $350 a pop. I held on to them and now... zilch!

It started with my grandfather and I when I was little, and I still collect certain sports stuff bc it was something we shared. To each his own, I guess. Some ppl collect art, I like sports.

Just kidding with you as I was huge into baseball cards in the mid 80's and had plenty of 85's rookies. I also have the signed 1998 ball by the whole team and CPF like you stated but just lost interest in collecting those type of items. Bigger toys nowadays.

It's funny how some kids never grow out of signed memorabilia.

I'll admit I am still very much into sports cards and signed sports memorabilia. I have a very large collection of both. You know your hobby is a bit out of control when you have to purchase a building to show/display it all. I currently have over 2.4 million cards and about 900 signed items NOT including cards. It's enjoyable to me.

I've got a football signed from the OW game by Josh Dobbs, Nathan Peterman, AJ Johnson, Curt Maggit, Neiko Creamer, Todd Kelly Jr, Dillon Bates, RaShaan Gaulden, Jack Jones, Andrew Butcher, Cortez McDowell and Sara Mitchell. Haha.

Good for you!
