You know, there is a sports radio show here that identifies as the flagship station of Clemson. I never listen to it, but there’s a guy named Walt Deptula who comes on in the afternoons and I was on the road, so I figured I’d listen to see if he had anything to say about UT and the NCAA tournament, as well as Frank Martin being fired. Well, he didn’t disappoint. He did have some nice things to say about UT’s seeding and how well all the SEC teams play (which is odd because he can’t stand the SEC), but then he started dogging CRB and how he recruits, particularly how he allegedly recruited PJ Hall, who is the only good player Clemson has. He said he had knowledge of CRB talking bad about Clemson’s coach, and that he couldn’t stand CRB because of how he was when he coached at Clemson.
What he may or may not realize is that CRB was the last coach Clemson had who was a good coach, and they have perennially sucked since he has been gone. Outside of Hall, Clemson is probably not as good as some church teams. They’re all still butt-hurt after James signed with UT instead of Clemson.
But then you watch the interaction between CRB and James, as well as all the other players, and the evidence proves quite the contrary about him and how he carries himself. I’ve been blessed to meet him and I’m so thankful he is leading the Big Orange.

I think Barnes is a very different man and coach than he was when he was at Clemson. Whether or not, he spoke poorly of Clemson's coach, who knows? He could have simply been honest with the recruit.

True story: I ran into Rick and his wife a few years back while I was walking my dog (a fluffy white Samoyed named Gibson) at Lakeshore Park. He stopped and talked to me about Gibson for a few minutes and was just as genuine as you’d expect.

I’m sure he was being honest. The only person I’ve heard speak positively about their coach is Deptula. He keeps talking about “next year” and then Hall came out with something positive about him. Deptula even suggested that Clemson would’ve won the ACCT had they not lost to VT on the last-second shot. Purely delusional…
99% of the comments you hear about Clemson’s coach are negative. They want him gone, as it is clear that Clemson’s AD doesn’t invest in basketball. Their women haven’t been good in 20 years and it has been almost that long for the men.

This narrative would be so out of character that it’s impossible to believe unless someone has a recording. Barnes doesn’t have to talk down another coach to get recruits. He has the results and a hundred ex players to vouch for him - negative recruiting makes zero sense.

I don't know what did or didn't happen during his time at Clemson. Or if that was part of his character then.

But it has been stated time and time again, that during his time at Texas was when CRB found Christ and as with any of us, it completely changed his life.

Ever since he's been here he's been a phenomenal representative and leader for our university and the young men who have come through it. I get the frustrations at times but he has elevated our program and sustained a higher standard, doing it all with class and creative authentic loving relationships.

I am so thankful and proud to have Coach Barnes leading our program.

Part of the struggle CRB had going against him while he was at Clemson was just how good the ACC was. You had perennial powers like UNC and Duke, often times he was recruiting and coaching against legends like Dean Smith who practically ran that league. Clemson style of play was a bit brash to be kind about it, but they had an obvious talent deficiency against those teams so Rick had no choice in making his teams tougher and for the longest Dean Smith did not like that. Rick did what he had to do to be successful it wasn’t pretty but it was successful for a program like Clemson back then who had no prior success.
