I had it done at 19. It was fine. Good medicine. My tonsils were getting infected like twice a year and it was terrible pain. I get sick much less frequently now that they are gone.

Had mine out at 21....the dr prescribed liquid Demerol and it was awesome. I figured it would be similar to my wisdom teeth being removed....but it wasn't. It was worse.
The pain wasn't bad because I was on the Demerol. My advice would be to take the pain meds even if you think you don't need them the first couple of days. Don't even let the pain get started.
The recovery time may be more than you anticipate as well. This is what surprised me the most.

Have someone record the conversations afterwards. It will be an enjoyable video for you when you recover.

Pain was bad for me... had them out about the same age as you. When a doctor (different one than the guy who took them out), checked me a few hours after the surgery, he asked the nurse, "Who did this". Made some comment about a hack job.

I was in pain for 4-5 days... very bad experience for me.

It's not fun. Stay on schedule with your pain medication for the first few days and follow your instructions on diet and activity.

Had mine out when I was 19 after having mono. Holy smokes. They were the size of golf balls, according to the doc. Pain was incredible, but hopefully my circumstance was much more extreme than yours.

Good luck.

Drink the codeine, don’t cough and take the stool softeners!

Seriously had mine out going on 2 years ago now, it was horrible, my ENT did everything he could to keep me from needing them removed it’s that bad.

I woke up coughing cause I was choking on my saliva, sleep upright as possible, I would cough up a plug and blood would flow for minutes, my wife would wrap my throat in ice packs and ice until the bleeding stopped.

The first day isn’t bad as the anesthesia is still wearing off.
My worst day was 3-5, after about 7 days and 3 bottles of codeine I was eating and drinking fine, with the occasional soreness and discomfort.

All that codeine had me constipated until I took the stool softeners and that helped.
Stay hydrated. Stay rested, let the scars heal.

Hope you like smoothies, I had friends and family bring me smoothie king twice a day and that helped a lot.

My Dr said the problem with adults is that we have more surface area, weaker immune systems, and the need to get back to work and normal life faster, we don’t like to take too many days off and need to work.

Your voice may change, eating and drinking will be different but much easier, my tonsils swelled up so big I couldn’t hardly eat or drink and that’s when the dr said they must come out, dropped 15 pounds in 6 days from tonsillitis and strep back to back. My timing for swallowing was off and I’d occasionally choke a bit while drinking or eating.
Overall glad I went through that few weeks of hell for a lifetime of more comfort and no tonsillitis! It’s worth it trust me!

Edit: the nurse at Baptist memorial I saw twice due to the bleeding, told me to try and eat whatever I want when the pain eased up and that would help heal the scarred areas faster, don’t baby it for too long or the scar tissue won’t be strong, I did what she said and on day 7 I ate chips and dip, hot wings and sandwiches.

Beatbama... yup some of the same things I recall now that you mention it. I recall waking after surgery in a room with others that went through the same process... I was coughing and moaning. I spit up a lot of blood and stuff for a day or so, and then the pain set in. I kept on the meds and ran out, called for more and told the nurse I was in a lot of pain... she told me to STOP taking the meds as I was have an adverse reaction to them.

That was hard for me to hear... so I just went cold turkey and rode the pain out. Went to work after a couple of days... and tried to talk, could not and when I did folks were grossed out and asked me to stop trying to speak.

Lol. Yeah I found out what lean is and dr wrote me a rx for 4 Bottles as long as I was on the stool softeners, horrible drug to abuse, I wish had some edibles instead to stop the nausea, pain and inflammation.

I was 30 when mine came out.

I was in my early 20's when I had mine removed. Had good pain meds so it wasn't bad afterwards.

Yup they say the tonsils are 1/4 away from carotid artery..

It's an extremely common procedure especially when done by a veteran surgeon. As mentioned before stay on top of your baseline pain control, as in don't wait an extra hour to take your next pain meds. Take them when directed and only eat the foods that are listed on the post op instruction sheet. (if you can)Don't try talking, it's painful and can cause more irritation and swelling. Instead use a mobile device or a small dry erase board to communicate. It can take up to 10 days to get your voice back to normal, sometimes even longer so don't freak out. Stay hydrated! Fluid intake is the most important single factor in recovery after tonsillectomy. Not only is it good to drink extra fluid because you're on pain meds but the body heals faster when it's hydrated and the fluid keeps the throat and scabs moist which will also reduce pain.

I had mine out after mono at age 22, also the size of golf balls. I had 4 wisdom teeth ( 2 were sideways and had to be chiseled out) out at age 53. The tonsils were way worse.

I couldn't swallow spit ,or drink water. There is no way I could have eaten ice cream. Worst day of my life, physically.

I bet, heck they didn't even have anesthesia back then.

Imagine vomiting your guts out about 3-4 hours after surgery. The codeine made me sick as a dog so they had to give me liquid Demerol. I thought my throats was ripping apart every time I heaved. It sucked because it was on the side of Old Hickory Blvd. in a school zone as school was letting out..... gotta love that outpatient surgery.

I'm not a lover of pills or downers, but after having the liquid Demerol I understood how easily it could be to get hooked on that stuff

I had mine out late 20’s. All that BS about pudding and ice cream, I didn’t want to eat or drink anything for about 3 days.
