Tonsils taken out as an adult

Yep.... I didn't want to Freak the OP out initially, but once everyone started telling the truth I figured what the heck

I left the hospital wondering what the big deal was. Went to the grocery and loaded up on soft foods. Hung out for a couple of hours with family.

Then the anesthesia wore off. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Imagine vomiting your guts out about 3-4 hours after surgery. The codeine made me sick as a dog so they had to give me liquid Demerol. I thought my throats was ripping apart every time I heaved. It sucked because it was on the side of Old Hickory Blvd. in a school zone as school was letting out..... gotta love that outpatient surgery.

I'm not a lover of pills or downers, but after having the liquid Demerol I understood how easily it could be to get hooked on that stuff
Mine was 45 years ago, and I was hospitalized. While I was knocked out for a few hours after surgery, I bled a bunch down my throat, woke up, got sick as a dog, and puked blood for an hour or so. My throat felt like someone had stuck the small propeller from a blender down it and spun it around at 10,000 rpm, then used one of those serrated grapefruit spoons to dig out my tonsils.

Had mine out at 21....the dr prescribed liquid Demerol and it was awesome. I figured it would be similar to my wisdom teeth being removed....but it wasn't. It was worse.
The pain wasn't bad because I was on the Demerol. My advice would be to take the pain meds even if you think you don't need them the first couple of days. Don't even let the pain get started.
The recovery time may be more than you anticipate as well. This is what surprised me the most.

I too had them out at 21. It was absolutely as bad as Carl said.

Sorry bro. Good luck.

Dang. I guess I was lucky. Mine was pretty easy and my tonsils were huge. It did hurt badly once the meds wore off, but you just stick with the codine and you’ll be okay.

I also fell in love with Pink Floyd that summer.

Go figure.

All us adults having bad times with a tonsillectomy, my 5 yo niece didn’t skip a beat! I hope I can find a doc to get my sons out when their of age, just to save them from the misery.

There's nothing like opioids and Pink Floyd!

The worst part for me was having to wait until they got the swelling and infection under control before the surgery

Worst experience of my life. Had mine done at 24. Pain, horrible. Had massive bleeding about 3-4 days after and had to have 2nd surgery. I'd demand stitches over cauterization.

Trust me bro.... take the pain meds the first couple of days even if you don't think you need them.... rest.... take it easy and make yourself eat whatever you can.

If you don't feel like eating that's ok but you need to force yourself to drink fluids. Fluids, fluids, fluids.

When my youngest daughter was about 5 years old she had hers taken out. The first thing she said when she woke up was "if I had've known it would hurt this bad I never would have agreed to do it". I had to hold back busting out laughing cause I knew she was in pain.
